The royal lily is the true queen of all flowers
One of the most beautiful, elegant and most admired flowers is certainly the lily. There are countless different types of lilies, but only one stands out above all – the royal lily, also called the king's lily or the Christmas lily. The royal lily, which is known under the botanical name Lilium regale, belongs to the flowering species of lilies and is characterized by a specific flower shape reminiscent of a royal crown or trumpet. The flowers boast various shades of color from whitish to pinkish to deep pink or burgundy.
Queen among the lilies
A lily that you buy at a flower shop to give to someone is a magnificent flower to look at, but if you saw it growing out of the ground, you would be speechless in awe. This species grows up to two meters in ideal conditions and can easily reach a height of around one and a half meters in your garden. When it blooms, it is something so fantastic that it passes the eye. The leaves grow from the stem at irregular intervals, but the flowers are completely regular and unreal. They reach a length of up to 14 centimeters. At first they are purple in color when undeveloped, after flowering they are beautifully white on the inside with a bright yellow center, while the outer part of the flowers remains partly purplish or pinkish.

British beauty
Are you wondering why this type of lily is called the royal lily? It's not just her beauty and size. But it is also an indication that it is loved by the British in particular and that in 1903, thanks to the grower and explorer Ernest Henry Wilson, it came to Great Britain from southwestern China, which is its original home. From there it was only a step to the pompous name king's lily or royal lily (both names are commonly used). In New Zealand, where people have also fallen in love with this beautiful flower, it is called a little differently, but no less respectfully – Christmas lily.

Magnificent but treacherous
Although lilies are popular flowers and people like to have them tied into bouquets, it is still a good idea to be wary of them. Many of us forget that they are very toxic. Surprisingly, they are the most dangerous for cats, who could die or have serious health problems after ingesting them. They are in danger both from "live" lilies and, for example, from dried ones that people often keep as decoration. It follows quite logically that owners and growers of lilies should also look after their other animals, not to mention children. The whole range of lilies is very treacherous and can cause serious health problems.
Lily will always please you
If you wander in vain through a flower shop and don't know what flower to buy your loved one or what to give someone as a gift, you can never go wrong with a lily. If the florist offers a royal lily, be sure to choose it, because it will bring the recipient to her knees with its beauty. Tied up in a bouquet, it looks spectacular. And if you add a bottle of quality wine or quality chocolate, you will become the star of any celebration.
