Syringa (Lilac) – An Intoxicating Scent That Opens the Gates of Spring
Lilac (Syringa vulgaris) belongs to the olive family (Oleaceae, the same family as jasmine or the olive tree) and comes from the Balkan Peninsula, where it grows as a deciduous shrub. Its Latin name Syringa comes from the Greek syrinx (pipe), referring to its hollow stems, once used to make musical instruments. Today, though, lilac is above all a symbol of nostalgia, first love, and an unmistakable sweet scent that can transform the atmosphere of an entire home in an instant.
Why is lilac the “star of the moment”? Its season is one of the shortest of the year – usually lasting only a few weeks in May. Lilac offers incredible volume thanks to its rich clusters full of tiny florets. Whether you reach for the classic purple, pure white, or gentle pink, you always get a piece of nature in its purest form.

Tip from Andrea (Seasonal Arrangements Specialist): “Lilac is wonderful, but it is a big 'drinker.' If you bring it home, remove all the leaves from the stems that would otherwise sit in the water – they steal strength from the flower. My secret trick? Give the woody end of the stem a long, diagonal cut, and feel free to lightly crush the end with a hammer so it can draw up water better.
