Gladiolus (Sword Lily) – The Majestic Sword of the Summer Garden
Gladiolus is a bulbous plant from the iris family (Iridaceae), native mostly to South Africa. It does not need to shout to be noticed – its vertical dominance speaks for itself. The Latin name translates as “little sword,” a fitting description of its blade-like leaves and sturdy stems, and it remains a symbol of high summer and pride to this day.

The flower of champions: In ancient Rome, victorious gladiators were showered with gladioli, making it a flower of victory, strength, and moral integrity.

A local touch: During the season (July–September) we prefer Czech growers. Locally grown gladioli have firmer tissue and colours that keep glowing longer in the bouquet.

Heart on your sleeve: In the language of flowers, gladiolus says: “You are an honest and strong person.” At the same time, its “pierced” shape has traditionally symbolised deep infatuation.

If you keep one at home, watch out for one thing: gladioli are sensitive to gravity and light. If you tilt the vase, the tips will start curving upward – so always keep them in a deep vase, standing straight.
