Zamioculcas – An Elegant, Indestructible Plant for Any Interior

Zamioculcas zamiifolia (known as the "ZZ plant" or "lucky plant") comes from East Africa and is the absolute number one choice for beginner and forgetful plant owners alike. Its dark green, oval-lanceolate and extremely glossy leaves feel luxurious and add a modern style to any home or office.

The plant gradually grows to about 1 meter tall and is famous for surviving almost anything – except overwatering.

How to Grow Zamioculcas? (Guide and Care)

Light: Zamioculcas is incredibly adaptable. It thrives best in a bright spot without direct sun, but tolerates partial shade or darker corners very well (it will just grow more slowly there).

Watering (Here's the secret to success): Zamioculcas stores water in its fleshy stems and underground tubers. Water it very sparingly, once every 14 to 21 days. The substrate must always dry out completely between waterings. In winter, watering once a month is enough.

Temperature: Room temperature (18–25 °C) is ideal. It doesn't like drafts or temperatures below 15 °C.

Fertilizing: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed once a month with liquid houseplant fertilizer.

Tip from Monika: What to do if your Zamioculcas leaves turn yellow? The most common cause of death for this otherwise indestructible plant is overwatering. If the leaves start turning yellow, softening, or even falling off, stop watering immediately. If the soil is too wet, remove the plant from the pot, cut away any rotting roots, and repot it into fresh, dry substrate with good drainage at the bottom (e.g. expanded clay).

What to Watch Out For

Zamioculcas contains needle-like calcium oxalate crystals — if a leaf is chewed, it can cause mouth irritation, drooling, or vomiting in cats, dogs and children. We recommend keeping the plant out of their reach. Under normal handling, without chewing, the plant is completely safe.

Spring Repotting and Propagation

Zamioculcas grows slowly and doesn't need frequent repotting. Repot it in spring (ideally March/April) only once its underground tubers are literally deforming the plastic pot. Use a well-draining substrate mixed with sand (or a cactus and succulent substrate). While repotting, you can easily propagate the plant by dividing the tuber clusters.
