Czech Public Holidays 2026: A Full Overview of Days Off and Shop Opening Hours

Planning a holiday, a long weekend, or just want to know when you'll get to rest in 2026? The calendar is very generous to employees this year. Most public holidays fall on weekdays, which opens up plenty of room for relaxation and visits with loved ones.

We bring you a complete calendar of Czech public holidays, an explanation of their origins, and important information about shop opening hours. As a bonus, we've added an overview of "flower holidays", which aren't official days off, but are marked in red on every florist's calendar.

When Must Shops Be Closed? (Act No. 223/2016 Coll.)

In the Czech Republic, trading hours are regulated by law, which requires shops larger than 200 m² to remain closed on certain days.

CLOSED on these days: January 1st, Easter Monday (April 6th), May 8th, September 28th, October 28th, December 24th (from 12:00 PM), and December 25th and 26th.
MAY BE OPEN: Good Friday (April 3rd), May 1st, July 5th and 6th, November 17th.

Detailed Overview of Public Holidays for 2026

January 1st (Thursday) – Restoration Day of the Independent Czech State / New Year's Day

On the first day of the year we celebrate not only the new year, but also the founding of the independent Czech Republic in 1993. Shops are closed by law. It's an ideal time for New Year family visits.

April 3rd (Friday) – Good Friday

A day commemorating the Christian Passion. For pupils and employees alike, it marks the start of a long Easter weekend. Shops may be open.

April 6th (Monday) – Easter Monday

The traditional spring holiday, associated with the pomlázka (willow-branch) custom. Note that large shops must be closed. Easter is a wonderful occasion to give spring decorations and flowers.

May 1st (Friday) – Labour Day

A day of love as well as a celebration of work. In 2026 it falls on a Friday, giving you the first long weekend of May. Shops stay open. Don't forget red roses for your other half!

May 8th (Friday) – Victory Day

Marking the end of World War II in Europe. Another long weekend in a row! Large shops, however, must be closed.

July 5th (Sunday) – Saints Cyril and Methodius Day

Commemorating the arrival of the two missionaries in Great Moravia. Since it falls on a Sunday, it doesn't extend the weekend, but shops may be open.

July 6th (Monday) – Jan Hus Day

Commemorating the reformer Jan Hus, burned at the stake. Thanks to the Monday date, we get a pleasant long weekend in July. Shops may be open.

September 28th (Monday) – Czech Statehood Day

The feast of Saint Wenceslas, patron saint of Bohemia and Moravia. The Monday date again invites a short getaway. Large shops are closed by law.

October 28th (Wednesday) – Independent Czechoslovak State Day

Celebrating the founding of Czechoslovakia in 1918. A major national holiday, during which large shops must be closed.

November 17th (Tuesday) – Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day

Commemorating the events of 1939 and 1989. Shops may be open. This day is often used to extend the weekend by taking Monday off as well.

December 24th (Thursday) – Christmas Eve

The peak of Christmas preparations. Shops over 200 m² may only be open until 12:00 PM.

December 25th (Friday) – Christmas Day

The day marking the birth of Christ, and a time for family gatherings. Shops are fully closed.

December 26th (Saturday) – St. Stephen's Day

A continuation of the Christmas holidays. Large stores remain closed on this day too.

Important "Flower Holidays" of 2026

These days aren't official public holidays, and there's no extra time off, but that's exactly when the most gifting happens. Don't forget to mark them in your calendar:

February 14th (Saturday) – Valentine's Day: A celebration of everyone in love.
March 8th (Sunday) – International Women's Day: A day honouring all women.
May 10th (Sunday) – Mother's Day: A thank-you to our mothers (always the 2nd Sunday of May).
