Agapanthus (Lily of the Nile) – Literally the “Flower of Love”
Agapanthus (known here as “kalokvět”) belongs to the amaryllis family (Amaryllidaceae) and comes from South Africa (specifically the Cape region), where it grows as a tuberous perennial on sunny slopes. Its roots hold moisture even through dry spells. It has won the hearts of florists worldwide with its nobility and unique blue colour, which is fairly rare in the plant kingdom.
What does it look like? A firm, leafless stalk up to a metre tall rises from a rosette of long, strap-shaped leaves. At its tip, a rich, umbrella-shaped flower head opens – literally a firework of dozens of tiny star-shaped blooms. Agapanthus loves the sun, and in our conditions it thrives beautifully as a container plant, since it cannot tolerate hard frost.
Symbolism and meaning: Its name is a compound of two Greek words: agape (love in its deepest, spiritual sense) and anthos (flower). Agapanthus is therefore literally the “flower of love.” It symbolises not only romantic affection but also purity of heart and fertility. That is why it is often used in wedding floristry as a modern alternative to traditional roses.
