Amaryllis (Hippeastrum) is the queen of winter. Its huge velvety blooms brighten Advent, Christmas and the long winter months. Choose a waxed amaryllis that needs no water or pot, a potted amaryllis that can bloom again next year, or a cut amaryllis for the vase and Christmas bouquets.

Which amaryllis to choose?

Waxed amaryllis: a bulb coated in decorative wax needs no water or pot and blooms right on your table. Amaryllis Wax reaches 50–60 cm and has two stems with red flowers. The collector's Delft Blue edition grows from 25–30 cm up to 50 cm and blooms for 3–5 weeks.

Potted amaryllis: the red and white one are 60–70 cm tall with two stems and come in a gift bag. It is a perennial: after flowering, grow it outdoors over the summer and it will bloom again next year.

Cut amaryllis: the red amaryllis and the white Mont Blanc have a 60 cm stem and belong in Advent bouquets and vases. The cut amaryllis season runs from November to January.

Amaryllis FAQ

When should I buy an amaryllis so it blooms for Christmas?
According to Monika, a waxed amaryllis bought a month before Christmas will bloom for Christmas. For a bulb planted in soil, count on 6–8 weeks from planting to flower, which is why it is planted at the beginning of November.

Do I need to water an amaryllis?
A waxed one, no: it needs neither water nor a pot. Water a potted amaryllis only minimally at first and never leave it standing in water, or the bulb will rot.

Will the amaryllis bloom again next year?
A potted amaryllis will, because it is a perennial. After flowering, cut off the faded stems, let the leaves grow back outdoors over the summer and give it 6–8 weeks of rest in the dark and dry in autumn.

How long does a cut amaryllis last?
Up to 14 days in a vase. A thin skewer inserted into the hollow stem supports it so the heavy flowers do not break.
