Amaryllis (botanically Hippeastrum) is a gorgeous flower originally from the tropical regions of South and Central America. It's renowned for its huge, bell-shaped blooms on a long, sturdy stem, and is an absolutely iconic winter and Christmas decoration.
But growing amaryllis from a simple bulb requires following a few growing rules. How do you do it at home in a pot, and can it even be grown outdoors in a Czech garden?

Step by Step: How to Grow Amaryllis in a Pot (Indoors)
For the bulb to sprout properly, it needs warmth, light, and very careful watering:

When and how to plant: Plant the bulbs between November and April. Choose a pot only about 2 cm wider than the bulb itself. Plant it so that the top third stays uncovered above the soil!

Location and temperature: Place the pot in a bright spot (ideally by a south- or east-facing window). The ideal temperature for waking up the bulb is 21–25°C.

Watering (the most common mistake): Until the bulb sprouts its first green stem, water only very minimally. Once the plant starts growing, increase watering slightly, but never let the bulb sit in water — it would rot immediately.

Growing straight: Turn the pot a quarter turn every few days. The plant leans strongly toward the sun, and without turning it, the stem could bend and even break.
Amaryllis after flowering: what next
Amaryllis is a perennial, so do not throw it away after it flowers. Cut off the spent stems, let the leaves grow on outdoors over the summer and give it a rest in autumn. Then it will bloom again.

Can Amaryllis Be Grown Outdoors in a Czech Garden?
The short answer is: yes, but only over summer. In our climate, amaryllis isn't frost-hardy at all. If you left the bulb in a garden bed over winter, it would freeze and die with the first frosts. But it can very successfully be given a "summer vacation" outdoors, which actually does the bulb a world of good — it soaks up plenty of nutrients from the sun and grows beautifully sturdier for its next bloom.
How to summer your amaryllis outdoors:

When to put it outside: Move the plant to the garden only in mid-May, once the morning frosts have reliably passed (after the "Ice Saints").

Choosing a spot: Avoid direct scorching sun, which would burn the leaves. A bright, partial shade is ideal (for example, under a tree or by an east-facing wall).

Planting method: Experienced growers recommend sinking it into the ground, pot and all. The soil in the bed prevents the roots from overheating, and in autumn you can easily remove it without any damage.

Watering: Water regularly at the roots over summer (not onto the bulb itself), and you can add a potassium-rich fertilizer.
Bringing It Back Indoors and Dormancy (What to Do in Autumn?)
For the bulb to survive its time outdoors and bloom again, you need to act before the cold arrives. During September, stop watering the plant entirely. In late September (before the frosts), bring it back indoors.
Don't cut off the green leaves — let them naturally turn yellow and dry out (the bulb draws nutrients back from them). Then remove the dried leaves and store the cleaned bulb somewhere dark and cool (8–15°C) for 6 to 8 weeks. Only after this "dormancy period" is the bulb ready to be planted again.
Why does my amaryllis not bloom and what to do
- It lacked a rest period: After summer the bulb needs 6 to 8 weeks of rest in the dark and dry without watering (8–15 °C). Only then is it ready to be planted again.
- The bulb stood in water: Never let it stand in water, it would rot. Until the first green shoot appears, water only minimally.
- The bulb is buried completely: The top third of the bulb should stay above the soil.
- Too little light: The pot belongs in a bright place, ideally by a south or east window.
