Growing a Christmas Cactus: How to Get a Flood of Blooms for the Holidays?
The Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera) is, right after the poinsettia, the second most popular plant of the Czech holiday season. Its exotic blooms in shades of pink, red, purple, or white can brighten any interior right when it's darkest outside.
Unlike a classic cactus, it doesn't come from the desert but from Brazilian rainforests. That means it needs slightly different care. Once you know how, it will reward you with blooms every year.

5 Rules for Successful Growing
To keep your Schlumbergera bringing you joy for years (it's a long-lived plant), follow these principles:
1. Light and Placement (Watch Out for Sunburn)
As a rainforest plant, it prefers bright, indirect light.

Ideal: An east- or north-facing window.

Watch out: Direct midday sun (especially in summer) would scorch its segmented leaf-pads, turning them red.
2. Temperature and Drafts
The ideal temperature for blooming is 15–20°C.

The cactus can't stand drafts (watch out for airing out the room in winter!) or radiant heat straight from a radiator. If it sits right above a hot heater, the buds will dry out and drop.
3. Watering (It's Not a Desert Cactus!)
Water it regularly, but with a light hand. The substrate should be slightly moist, but never soaked.

Rule of thumb: Let the top layer of soil dry out a little between waterings. If the roots sit in water, they'll rot.
4. Air Humidity
It loves humidity. In dry apartment air during winter, it benefits from misting the leaves (try not to spray directly onto open flowers) or placing the pot on a saucer of moist pebbles (expanded clay).
5. The Golden Rule: DON'T MOVE IT!
This is the most important piece of advice. Once the cactus sets buds, you must not change its location, or even turn it around.

The flowers orient themselves toward the light. If you turn the plant, it will try to reorient its flowers, which exhausts it so much that it drops the buds in shock.
The Secret: What to Do So It Blooms Again Next Year?
Many people complain that after Christmas their cactus never bloomed again. That's because it never had a rest period. For a Schlumbergera to set buds, it needs, starting in autumn (roughly from October):

Cool temperatures: Around 12–15°C.

Darkness (short days): It needs at least 12 hours of complete darkness a day.

Dryness: Cut watering to a minimum. Once small buds appear, you can gradually increase both temperature and watering, and look forward to a bloom by Christmas.
