Decorating a Grave at Christmas: Evergreens, Holly, Wreaths

Author: florist Jana, KvětinyExpres.cz · Updated: October 2026

Christmas at the cemetery is a quiet time when we want to bring a little greenery and light to a grave. A few evergreen boughs, a few sprigs of holly and one dignified bouquet or wreath is all it takes.

In this guide you will find out what suits a grave at Christmas, what lasts outdoors in winter and what does not belong on a grave. At the end you will find answers to the most common questions.

What suits a grave at Christmas

  • Evergreen boughs of spruce and fir: traditional winter decoration and the base of most wreaths.
  • Sprigs of holly (Ilex): deep green leaves and red berries, a symbol of eternal life.
  • A wreath with an evergreen base: it lasts outdoors longer than a bouquet.
  • Bouquets for laying: made of hardy flowers such as carnations and chrysanthemums.
  • Year-round decoration: an artificial wreath or a succulent planter for those who cannot visit often.

Evergreens and decorated natural branches (spruce, fir)

Evergreen boughs are the most traditional winter decoration of a grave. Green branches of spruce or fir form the base, which you complete with sprigs of holly with red berries, cones or a ribbon. It is a simple solution that looks dignified and festive while keeping its natural look.

Christmas ornaments combined with natural material also suit a grave. Into the evergreens or sprigs of spruce, fir or holly you can tuck red baubles, a ribbon or golden details. A coloured ornament gives the grave a festive touch and the natural greenery anchors it. Choose smaller ornaments and secure them firmly so the wind does not carry them away.

Holly: red berries and greenery that cope with winter

Holly (Ilex) is an evergreen shrub with glossy leaves and red berries. In Christian symbolism it is a symbol of eternal life, which is why it suits graves at Christmas. Cut sprigs are 50–60 cm long and you can tuck them into a wreath or add them to a bouquet. Frost-hardy holly in a pot (Ilex aquifolium Argentea Marginata) tolerates even hard frosts.

A tip from florist Andrea

“You can let sprigs of holly dry and use them in Christmas decorations and wreaths, so they don't have to end up in the bin after the holidays.”

You will find more about its care and use in the article Holly (Ilex).

Wreaths and bouquets for laying

A wreath of evergreens is one of the best choices for a grave in winter. Choose bouquets for laying from flowers that last longer.

A tip from florist Jana

“The evergreen base of this wreath stays fresh for several weeks outdoors – which is why it is a popular choice for a grave, not only for a ceremony.”

  • Carnations: give a bouquet a long life, so it looks dignified even after several days on the grave.
  • Eryngium (sea holly): dries beautifully in a bouquet and does not change colour even after weeks.
  • Eucalyptus: in a funeral heart it stays fresh for a good two weeks even after the roses have dried.

With every wreath and bouquet we add a printed funeral ribbon. You write the colour and text into the order note.

When you cannot visit the cemetery often

Fresh decoration eventually fades and a grave needs care. If you cannot visit regularly, choose a year-round solution.

A tip from florist Andrea

“Succulents are an absolutely ideal choice for outdoor memorial places. I realise that many of our customers cannot visit the cemetery and water plants every week. Succulents need almost no care, cope very well with summer droughts and give a gravestone a neat, very noble look all year round.”

Artificial fabric wreaths with a diameter of 55 cm stay beautiful on a gravestone for months regardless of the season and need no maintenance.

Colours and their meaning

  • White and yellow: light, hope and gratitude for the time spent together.
  • Red: deep, never-fading love and a strong bond of life, especially for the closest family.
  • Pink and white: tenderness, a common choice for honouring the memory of women.
  • Purple: a deep colour and a dignified look that we often choose for funeral arrangements.

What does not belong on a grave at Christmas

The poinsettia and the Christmas cactus are among the most popular Christmas plants, but do not put them on a grave in winter. They are tropical plants sensitive to cold. A poinsettia only needs a moment in the frost to drop its leaves, and a Christmas cactus drops its buds after cold shock. They are wonderful indoors, but not at the cemetery in frost. You can read how to care for them at home in the articles about the poinsettia and the Christmas cactus.
