"You often ask about the 'right' color. Etiquette isn't as strict as it used to be. If the deceased loved yellow roses, it's a beautiful gesture to bring exactly those. For women, I recommend softer tones (white, pink, purple); for men, darker or more neutral colors. But the most important thing is the sincerity of your gesture."
Which Flower to Choose for a Funeral for a Man?
Choosing flowers for a man has its own specifics. The goal is to create an arrangement that feels dignified, solid, and less "decorative" than one for a woman.
Suitable colors: For men, we most often choose darker, richer shades. Deep red (bordeaux), blue, purple, or classic white and cream are ideal, combined with lush dark greenery (such as eucalyptus or monstera).
Recommended varieties: Lilies, large-flowered roses, gerberas, or exotic anthuriums work beautifully, since they hold a firm shape and feel masculine. Chrysanthemums are also very popular for their long vase life and symbolism of respect.
Arrangement shape: For men, a triangular or teardrop-shaped foam arrangement with a clear structure is often chosen.
Which Flowers to Choose? Grouped by Relationship
The type of flower should match how close you were to the deceased.
1. Immediate Family (Wreaths and Large Arrangements)
Husband, wife, children, siblings. Immediate family usually arranges the main floral décor placed in immediate proximity to the coffin.
Funeral wreaths: The circle symbolizes eternity, the cycle of life, and endless love. Wreaths are placed on stands around the catafalque.
A bouquet for the coffin: An arrangement in the shape of a bouquet or a cross, laid directly on the coffin lid.
2. Friends, Colleagues, and Extended Family (For Laying Down)
If you're attending a funeral as a guest, the usual choice is a bouquet placed in front of the coffin or on the floor of the hall.
Foam arrangements: This is the best choice. They're arranged in a special water-retaining floral foam, so they stay fresh longer and have a solid base, so they won't tip over. They're often shaped like a teardrop, a pyramid, or a heart.
3. Acquaintances and Neighbors (A Hand-Carried Bouquet)
A simple arrangement you carry in hand (a condolence bouquet) and, upon entering the ceremonial hall, lay in the designated spot or alongside the other flowers.
Tip: White lilies, roses, or chrysanthemums tied with a funeral ribbon are all suitable.

How Many Flowers: Even or Odd?
In Czech tradition, one essential rule applies to funeral arrangements: an even number of flowers.

Why? Tradition holds that one flower is for the deceased and the other symbolizes God (or serves as protection, so the deceased "isn't alone").

Exception: This rule doesn't apply to large wreaths and foam arrangements (where individual blooms aren't counted), or if you're laying a single rose on the coffin or into the grave as a farewell.
