Anthurium (Flamingo Flower) – Exotic Elegance with a Glossy Heart
Anthurium is a genus of tropical plants from the arum family (Araceae), native to the rainforests of Central and South America. It is utterly unmistakable thanks to its glossy, waxy “flowers.” In fact, what you see is a coloured bract (spathe) protecting the true flower spike, the protruding “thumb” called the spadix.
What it looks like and where it grows: Anthuriums are known for their stiff, leathery leaves and striking heart-shaped bracts. In the wild they often grow as epiphytes (on trees), which explains their remarkable resilience and their ability to draw moisture from the air. The colour range is fascinating – from the classic red Anthurium, symbolising passion, to the modern and highly sought-after green Anthurium, perfect for minimalist interiors.
A symbol of dignity and hospitality: Anthurium symbolises abundance, happiness, and hospitality. Thanks to its clean, almost austere shape and extreme longevity (often lasting more than 3 weeks in a vase), it also has an irreplaceable place in other areas of floristry.
