Begonia – the colourful queen of window boxes and living rooms
Begonia (genus Begonia) is one of the most popular and versatile plants around. This huge genus contains over 2,000 species and you'll find it both on summer balconies and window boxes, and as a plant that flowers indoors all year round. It's this versatility and rich colour range that makes begonias a favourite with just about everyone.
What does it look like? Begonias have noticeably fleshy, glossy leaves (asymmetrical, "lopsided" in some species) and abundant flowers in shades of pink, red, white, orange and yellow. The blooms can be single or fully double, resembling small roses.
Types: You'll most often come across two types. Begonia Elatior is an indoor variety that flowers almost all year round and makes an ideal gift for a home or office. Begonia semperflorens (a bedding plant), on the other hand, is planted outdoors in window boxes and beds, where it withstands summer heat and light drought better than many other bedding plants.
Tip from Monika (Quality & Plant Care Specialist): "Begonias prefer partial shade to full sun – direct sunlight easily scorches the leaves. Always water only once the top layer of soil has dried out, as overwatering is what they tolerate worst. You'll be rewarded with regular flowering on your indoor Begonia Elatior if you give it warmth, no draughts, and slightly humid air."
Symbolism: Begonias are associated with caution and uniqueness – in the language of flowers they symbolise harmony and balance. Thanks to their low maintenance and long-lasting blooms, they make a popular gift that brings joy for months.
