Calla (Zantedeschia) is a genus of tuberous plants from the arum family (Araceae), native to South Africa. It is not just a flower – it is an architectural element. Its smooth, trumpet-shaped bract and sturdy, fleshy stem make it one of the most elegant items in our collection.
What it looks like and what makes it special: What we perceive as the “bloom” is in fact a transformed leaf (a bract) wrapping around the central spadix. Its lines are so pure that it became an icon of the Art Deco style in the 1920s and 30s. The classic white Calla remains the most sought-after, but the deep burgundy and near-black varieties are just as striking, with a distinctly mystical feel.
A symbol of purity and new beginnings: In the language of flowers, the white Calla symbolises purity, innocence, and rebirth. That is why it has been a timeless staple of wedding bouquets for decades. At the same time, it is also a symbol of deep respect, which makes it well suited to dignified funeral arrangements.

But here is one important tip for home care: Calla stems are very soft and prone to rotting. Only put a small amount of water in the vase (about 5–8 cm) – too much and the stem turns mushy. It is better to top it up more often instead. Cared for this way, it will bring you joy for up to 10 days.”
