Delphinium – Elegant Arrows of the Summer Sky
Delphinium belongs to the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae), and the garden hybrids grown for cutting mostly descend from European and Asian species. It grows as a perennial. Its tall, slender spikes studded with dozens of delicate florets look like blue arrows pointing to the sky. Finding a true, deep blue in nature is harder than finding a free parking spot in central Prague, but Delphinium pulls it off with total ease.
Facts that will delight you:
-
A dolphin in the bud: The name comes from the Greek delphís (dolphin). Look closely at an unopened bud and its shape really does resemble a leaping sea mammal.
-
Symbolism: It represents lightness of being, an open heart, and good spirits. It is a flower of encouragement – an ideal gift for new beginnings or reaching life goals.
-
Architecture in a vase: Thanks to its height it instantly gives a bouquet dynamism and a vertical dimension.
Tip from Andrea (Seasonal Arrangements Specialist): “Delphinium is indispensable for me when I want to give a bouquet a 'meadow' look. In our Blue Dolphin bouquet it creates gorgeous architecture. My professional trick: Delphinium has a hollow stem and drinks an incredible amount of water. If you want your Delphinium colour mix to last as long as possible, check the water level daily – these are real 'thirsty' flowers. They pair beautifully with fuller blooms like roses or peonies.”
