Growing Eucalyptus in a Pot – Advice From Our Expert Monika
Eucalyptus is no longer just something that belongs to the Australian bush. It has become a darling of Czech interiors and terraces alike. Its silvery leaves and unmistakable minty scent, released with every touch, work as perfect natural aromatherapy.

Which Type of Eucalyptus Should You Bring Home?
Not all eucalyptus is created equal. For growing in containers on balconies and indoors, I especially recommend these two favorites:

Eucalyptus gunnii: An absolute classic, with smaller round leaves. It's the hardiest of all the varieties and will forgive you the occasional growing mistake.

Eucalyptus cinerea Silver Dollar: My personal favorite. It has gorgeous large, silvery-frosted leaves that look like coins. It grows a bit slower, which is a real advantage for growing it in a pot.
If you don't feel ready to grow a live plant yet but love that scent, you can start with cut eucalyptus in a vase. It'll stay beautiful for easily 14 days, and afterward it dries wonderfully too.
A Practical Growing Guide: How Do You Do It?
1. Sun, Sun, and More Sun
At heart, eucalyptus is an Australian. It needs full sun. Inside your home, put it in the absolute brightest spot you have, ideally right at a south-facing window. If it gets too little light, it'll quickly start putting out thin, weak branches and lose its signature silver color.
2. Watering: The "Damp Thumb" Method
This is where most people trip up. Eucalyptus can't stand drought, but on the other hand, it can't stand standing in a puddle either.

My advice: Stick your finger into the soil. If the top 2 centimeters of substrate are dry, water the plant.

Watch for browning: If the leaves start turning brown and brittle, either you let it dry out completely (the root ball should never pull away from the pot's sides), or it's the opposite — it's overwatered and the roots are rotting.
3. Substrate and the Right "Bed"
Forget about ordinary soil from the garden. Eucalyptus needs a well-draining, slightly acidic substrate. I mix a standard houseplant substrate with perlite or coarse sand in a 3:1 ratio. A thick layer of drainage material (expanded clay) at the bottom of the pot is essential too.

4. Overwintering (This Is Where People Make the Most Mistakes)
A potted eucalyptus simply won't survive outdoors in a Czech winter frost, no matter what the garden-center label says about it being "frost-resistant."

Summer: Once the late-spring frosts disappear in May, take it out to the balcony or garden. Fresh air genuinely works wonders on it.

Winter: Bring it back indoors in October. It needs a bright but cool room (ideally 5–12°C). If you leave it in the living room right next to the heater over winter, the dry air will kill it within a month.
5. Pruning: Don't Be Afraid of the Scissors!
Eucalyptus grows like a weed. So that it doesn't eventually turn into an unsightly leggy broom, don't be afraid to give it a proper trim in spring. This forces it to bush out nicely. And the best part? Take what you trim off and put it in a vase, or use it to scent your bathroom — warm shower steam releases the essential oils from the leaves beautifully.
