Hyacinth – The Intoxicating Scent of Spring in Your Vase
Hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis) belongs to the asparagus family (Asparagaceae) and comes from the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, where it grows as a bulb. While other flowers lure you in with colour, hyacinth goes straight for your senses with its intense, sweetly intoxicating scent. It is one of the few flowers where a single stem is enough to perfume an entire room and conjure up the feeling of true spring.

Mythological roots: According to Greek myth, the hyacinth sprang from the blood of the beautiful youth Hyakinthos, whom the god Apollo loved. It is a flower with a deep history.

Symbolism: It represents constancy, playfulness, and a sporting spirit. In blue it symbolises sincerity, in white beauty and prayer.

A scent like a signature: Every colour smells slightly different – white and blue hyacinths tend to be more fragrant than pink varieties.

We often deliver it with the bulb still attached. If you place a hyacinth with its bulb in a vase with a little water, it keeps drawing nutrients from it and lasts remarkably long. Just watch out: hyacinth sap can irritate the skin, so wash your hands after trimming the stems. In spring bouquets I love pairing it with tulips – it is a perfect visual and fragrant duet.”
