Outside in gardens, hyacinths wake up in March and April, but in the florist's calendar their season starts much earlier. Thanks to growers, we can enjoy their scent from January all the way through the end of spring. They're an absolute icon for International Women's Day flowers, since they carry within them the energy of awakening nature and a tribute to women.
A natural mystery: Why do hyacinths smell so intensely?
You might be wondering if the hyacinth is overdoing it a little with that scent. But there's a fascinating evolutionary reason behind it. Hyacinths bloom very early in spring, when it's still cold outside and insect pollinators are scarce.

Autumn dormancy (October–November): While we're bundling up in sweaters, hyacinth bulbs are settling into the ground. They need to go through a cold period (so-called stratification) to activate their growth hormones.

Winter preparation: During the frosts it seems like nothing is happening, but inside the bulb, the future flower is already forming.

Spring explosion (March–April): Once the soil warms up, the hyacinth shoots up with incredible speed. It draws energy directly from the reserves in the bulb, which is why it can bloom so early and so lushly.

If we give the bulb an artificial winter in the cold and then move it into warmth, it can happily bloom as early as January. A florist's expert insight: Watch out for the sap! Similar to daffodils, hyacinths also release a slimy sap after being cut. It's not as aggressive as with daffodils, but we still recommend changing the vase water more often so the stems don't clog up and the flower can keep drinking.
Tip from Andrea: How to get "immortal" hyacinths?
Water: Cut hyacinths love cold water. If they start "hanging their heads," it's often because they have too much water – just a few centimeters at the bottom of the vase is enough.
Temperature: The cooler the room, the longer the hyacinth will bloom. Feel free to move them to a hallway or a cooler windowsill for the night.
What about the bulb? Once your potted hyacinth has finished blooming, don't throw it out! Let the leaves dry out, remove the bulb, store it somewhere dark, and plant it in your garden come autumn. It'll greet you again next spring.
