Ilex (Holly) – The Red Pulse of Christmas and Winter Elegance
Ilex (holly) belongs to the holly family (Aquifoliaceae) and, depending on the species, is an evergreen or deciduous shrub or small tree. In floristry we love Ilex Aquifolium Argentea Marginata (native to Europe) for its characteristic spiky, white-edged leaves. For modern arrangements, though, we often choose Ilex verticillata (native to eastern America), which drops its leaves and lets the clean lines of berry-studded stems take centre stage. While delicate petals take the lead in summer, in winter structure and fruit colour rule – with its deep red, lacquered berries, Ilex is a symbol of light in the dark winter days and an absolute must-have for the Advent season.
