Tip from Florist Monika: The Secret of the "Nodes"
"The carnation is a keeper, but you need to know how to trim it. Notice that its stem has slightly swollen spots roughly every 10 cm — the so-called nodes. The mistake most people make: They cut the stem right at a node. But that's where the tissue is hardest, and the flower can't draw water through it. How to do it right: Always make the cut on the smooth part of the stem, between the nodes. And don't forget to remove any leaves that would sit in the water — on carnations, they rot extremely fast."
Symbolism: What Does a Carnation Mean?
The Latin name Dianthus means "divine flower."
White: Happiness and pure love.
Pink: Gratitude and a mother's love (a Mother's Day symbol in the US).
Dark red: Deep love and admiration.
Striped: Refusal (though today it's no longer taken that way — originality is prized instead).
The Modern Carnation in a Bouquet
Today carnations are used in mixed bouquets in "Boho" or "Vintage" styles.
Heads close together: It's fashionable to bunch carnations "dense" (head to head), creating a rounded, peony-like puff effect.

How to Care for Them?
Carnations are low-maintenance, but they can't stand one thing: ethylene.

Fruit: Don't place the vase next to a bowl of apples or bananas. Carnations would "fall asleep" (wilt) within a few hours.

Cutting: Trim the stems between the nodes (not at a node, since the stem is hard there and can't drink).

Water: They need less water, which you should change every 3 days.
