Poisonous Flowers: Which Beauties Are Dangerous for Children and Cats?
Flowers decorate our homes, but nature has equipped some of them with a defense mechanism – poison. That doesn't mean we should stop growing or giving them. But it's important to know which ones they are and handle them carefully, especially if you share your home with young children or curious pets.
We've put together an overview of the most common poisonous beauties you might encounter in our bouquets or in the garden.
1. Cut Flowers (Watch the Vase on the Table)
Even a gorgeous bouquet can contain species that call for caution. The risk mainly arises from ingestion (a cat nibbling on leaves, a child drinking water from the vase).
Lily (Lilium) – A Cat's Worst Nightmare
Lilies are beautiful and fragrant, but deadly dangerous for cats.

The risk: It's enough for a cat to brush against the pollen, lick its fur, or nibble a single petal. The toxins cause acute kidney failure.

Our recommendation: If you have a cat, we'd advise against bringing lilies into the home, or place them somewhere absolutely inaccessible and immediately remove the pollen-bearing anthers. They're less toxic for dogs and people (causing "only" digestive upset).
Daffodils and Tulips
These spring bulb flowers contain alkaloids.

The risk: Most of the toxin is in the bulb (which isn't a concern with cut flowers), but the stems and leaves are also mildly poisonous. The water in the vase they're standing in becomes toxic. Watch out that your dog doesn't drink it.
Chrysanthemums
They contain compounds that irritate the skin and mucous membranes. If ingested, they can cause vomiting in dogs and cats.
2. Houseplants and Garden Plants
Here, the concentration of toxins is often higher than in cultivated cut flowers.
Oleander (Nerium oleander)
The queen of summer terraces.

The danger: The entire plant is severely toxic (leaves, flowers, and wood alike). A single leaf can be fatal for a child. It affects the heart. Always wear gloves when handling it (e.g., pruning) and wash your hands afterward.
Foxglove (Digitalis)
A gorgeous, tall herb with bell-shaped flowers.

The danger: It contains glycosides (used in heart medications) that, in the wrong dose, can stop the heart. Poisoning is very serious.
Monkshood (Aconitum)
Commonly known as "wolf's bane." It's considered Europe's most poisonous plant.

The danger: Even touching it is toxic, as the alkaloids absorb through the skin. Never pick it for a bouquet without gloves!
Castor Bean (Ricinus communis)
An ornamental plant with red leaves.

The danger: Its seeds contain ricin, one of the most potent poisons in the world. For a child, ingesting just 3 seeds can be fatal.
Glory Lily (Gloriosa superba)
A climbing exotic plant with flame-colored flowers. It contains colchicine, which is severely toxic if the tuber or leaves are ingested.
What to Do If You Suspect Poisoning?
If you suspect a child or animal has eaten part of a poisonous plant:

Don't panic, but act quickly.

Remove any remaining plant material from the mouth.

Keep a sample of the plant for identification (or take a photo of it).

Do not induce vomiting (unless a doctor instructs you to) – with some plants, this can burn the esophagus.

Flowers are a joy, and most of them are perfectly safe. All it takes is a little caution, and knowing which ones in the garden not to "pet."
