History: From a Modest Exhibition to a Spectacular Show
The tradition began in 1954 in Funchal (the capital). Originally it was a small exhibition where local growers showed off what they'd cultivated. But Madeira is proud of its agricultural roots, and so the small event grew into a happening that draws people from all over the world. It's not just about beauty – it's a celebration of the land's fertility, the arrival of spring, and new life.

The Highlights of the Program (What You Have to See)
If you head to Madeira (usually around the turn of April and May), these experiences await you:
1. The Wall of Hope (Muro da Esperança)
A moving tradition that opens the festival. Thousands of children in traditional costumes come to the square, and each one places a single flower into a prepared wall. Out of these flowers, a giant Wall of Hope takes shape, symbolizing a wish for peace for the whole world.
2. The Grand Allegorical Parade
The high point of the festival. Enormous floats, completely covered in live flowers, roll through the streets of Funchal. These are no artificial substitutes – they're thousands of gerberas, roses, lilies, and strelitzias, out of which florists create sculptures, animals, and abstract art. The air is literally saturated with fragrance.
3. Flower Carpets
Local artists create intricate patterns of colorful petals on the pavement. It's a fleeting art form that takes your breath away.
