New Year's Eve and New Year: customs in brief
New Year's Eve is celebrated on 31 December because Pope Sylvester I died on that day in 335, and 31 December is the name day of Silvestr in the Czech calendar. You will find more about the name on the page When is the name day of Silvestr.
In the Czech Republic and Slovakia, lentils are traditionally served on New Year's Day to bring wealth. Before the end of the year, people send New Year cards wishing health and luck. According to folk superstition, one should not do laundry, hang out washing or sweep on New Year's Day, and should not serve poultry or fish so that luck does not fly or swim away. These are superstitions, not rules.
