Grape hyacinth (Muscari) – a tiny blue herald of spring
For us at KvětinyExpres.cz, the grape hyacinth is one of the most charming spring flowers. Small clusters of deep blue bells open among the very first blooms (March–April) and can turn a window box, a pot or a spring bouquet into a little carpet of colour. It needs no grand gesture – a few of them are enough to bring spring home.
Interesting facts:
- Named after a scent: The Latin name Muscari refers to musk – some species have a distinctly sweet, slightly musky fragrance.
- An easy bulb: Bulbs are planted in autumn (September–October) at a depth of 8–10 cm. Grape hyacinths are fully frost-hardy and multiply on their own, so they bloom every year.
- A calming colour: The bright blue flowers feel calm and fresh. In the language of flowers, blue is associated with trust and faithfulness.
- A great companion: The deep blue contrasts beautifully with yellow daffodils and with colourful tulips and hyacinths.
A tip from our florists: “Grape hyacinths look best in larger groups – several pots side by side are far more striking than a single plant. They are happiest in a sunny to partly shaded spot, and in the garden let the leaves die back naturally so the bulb gathers strength for next year.”
✦ Use at KvětinyExpres.cz: In the spring season we offer a potted grape hyacinth as a fresh gift with a personal message. In floristry, grape hyacinths suit spring arrangements and gift compositions, where they complement tulips, daffodils and hyacinths – find inspiration in our spring bouquets.
