The protea is one of the most striking cut flowers in the world. Its large sculptural bloom from South Africa looks more like an exotic jewel than an ordinary flower, yet it is easy to care for and lasts a long time.
In this guide you will find out what the protea means, how to put it in a vase, how long it lasts, how to dry it so it stays with you for years, and which bouquets it is most often used in.

What is a protea
The protea comes from South Africa, where the king protea is the national flower. The sculptural bloom made of stiff bracts appears in our range in pink and silvery tones. It symbolises courage, strength and transformation, which is why it is popular with people who do not want a classic bouquet.
Protea Silvia: a solo flower that does not need company
A tip from florist Bára
“Protea Silvia is my secret weapon for luxury design. I always put it alone in a tall, narrow vase so that its sculptural shape stands out. Do not try to combine it with too many other flowers, this queen wants to be alone at the centre of attention.”
How to care for a cut protea
- Stem: Before putting it in a vase, cut the stem at an angle with a clean knife and remove any leaves that would be under the water.
- Vase and water: A clean vase and fresh water that you change regularly.
- Position: Away from direct sun, radiators and drafts.
- Lifespan: In a vase it lasts about 2 weeks. It is one of the longest-lasting cut flowers.
How to dry a protea
A protea can be dried and keeps its shape and colour. It dries even if you do not put it in water at all and can last for years at home. Hang it upside down in a dry, dark and airy place.
Protea in autumn and Christmas bouquets
The protea is widely used in autumn and Christmas bouquets. Its sculptural bloom and rich colour match the autumn palette and Christmas decorations and give the bouquet a dominant centre. It lasts a long time in a vase, so it also works as decoration for the whole Advent season.
- The Protea bouquet (920 CZK) combines protea with eryngium, eustoma, spray rose, hypericum, limonium and oak leaves. It is in the categories Autumn bouquets and Christmas.
- The Bouquet of Autumn Protea (752 CZK) is made for autumn decoration.
- You will find more exotic bouquets in the category Exotic bouquets.
