May Day: A Holiday of Love, Kisses and Blossoming Trees
While the calendar marks May 1st as Labour Day, for most Czechs it's above all "a time for love". It's the day nature bursts into colour, everything blooms, and the air smells of hope. Set your obligations aside for a moment. May Day is the perfect occasion to pause and declare your love – whether with a kiss, or with flowers.

The best-known custom is, without a doubt, a kiss under a blossoming tree (most often a cherry, sour cherry or apple tree).
-
The superstition: Tradition holds that a girl kissed under a blossoming tree on May 1st will stay beautiful and attractive all year, and won't "wither". If she doesn't get her kiss, the opposite is said to happen.
-
For the gentlemen: Don't underestimate this one. It's one of the few traditions women genuinely love and look forward to.
More May Day Customs: Do You Know the "Máje"?
Besides kissing, this day comes with other cheerful traditions, kept alive mostly in villages.
-
Raising the "Máje" (Maypole): On the night before May 1st, young men would put up a decorated tree trunk (the "máje") under the window of the girl they fancied (or one large one on the village green). It's a symbol of protection and a declaration of love.
-
Paths of love: Boys in love would sprinkle a trail of sand or lime from their own house all the way to their sweetheart's, so everyone could see where their heart was leading them.

Which Flowers Should You Give on May 1st?
Flowers play a key role in celebrating spring. They're a symbol of new beginnings. If you're looking for an alternative to a blossoming cherry tree, go for spring, romantic varieties.
-
Tulips: A symbol of spring, and in red they express perfect love.
-
Daffodils and Violets: Smaller blooms that carry the scent of spring and the forest.
-
Lilac: Its scent is inseparably linked to the month of May.
Tip from our florist: Careful with lilac in a vase! "Many customers want a bouquet of lilac for May 1st. But we have a warning for you: lilac is gorgeous on the bush, but wilts very quickly in a vase (often by the very next day), because its woody stem can't absorb water fast enough. Advice: If you want a longer-lasting gift of love, choose pink roses instead, or a lush mixed bouquet in the shades of blossoming cherry (pink, white, cream). The effect will be just as beautiful, but the joy will last a week, not just one evening."
Love Blooms at Every Age
May Day isn't just for teenagers. It's a day when you can treat your wife, partner, or mother. You don't need a dance floor or a walk in the woods. A small gesture is enough. A bouquet delivered by courier with a note saying "So you never wither" says it all for you.
Enjoy the most beautiful month of the year.
