Ranunculus – The “Peony” That Arrives First
Persian buttercup (Ranunculus asiaticus) belongs to the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae, the same family as Delphinium) and comes from southeastern Europe and southwestern Asia, where it grows as a tuberous perennial. Customers often call it the “spring peony” because of its full blooms made up of hundreds of delicate, almost translucent petals. Despite its delicate look, it is one of the hardiest spring flowers.
What it looks like and what makes it special: Ranunculus opens from a firm bud into a perfect, round bloom that resembles a fluffy skirt. Our colour palette in February and March is nearly endless – from snowy white and powder pink to deep burgundy and unconventional green varieties.
A symbol of charm: In the language of flowers, Ranunculus says: “You are charming.” That is why, alongside tulips, it is an absolute staple for International Women's Day bouquets. It is a gift that expresses admiration for both feminine grace and inner strength.
Tip from Bára (Colour & Design Specialist): “Ranunculus is my absolute favourite for luxurious spring bouquets. It does have one secret: its stem is hollow and fragile. To make it last as long as possible in a vase, cut it with a very sharp knife (not scissors, which can crush the stem) and don't give it too much water – 5–10 cm is plenty. With the right care it rewards you by unfolding, day by day, to an incredible size. It also shines beautifully as a solo statement in our seasonal bouquets.”
