The Rose of Jericho, a Miracle of Nature

Have you ever heard of a plant that can be "dead," dry, and curled into a ball for years, yet wakes back to life within a few hours of touching water? Meet the Rose of Jericho.

At first glance it sounds like a fairy tale, but it's pure biology. Although it has "rose" in its name, it has botanically nothing in common with the classic queen of flowers. It's a fascinating desert plant (most commonly Selaginella lepidophylla) that has become a popular decoration and a symbol of resilience.

How Does the "Resurrection" Work?

This plant comes from the arid regions of Mexico and Texas. To survive extreme drought, it developed a unique strategy:

  1. Dormant state: When water runs out, the plant dries up, curls its branches into a tight ball (to protect its core), and enters a state known as anabiosis. It can then be blown across the desert by the wind until it hits moisture.

  2. Awakening: As soon as you place it in a bowl of water, its cells immediately start absorbing moisture. Within 24 hours, the dry brown ball unfurls into a flat rosette and (depending on the species and vitality) turns green.

The Symbolism of Christmas and a New Beginning

Thanks to its ability to "rise from the dead," the Rose of Jericho is a powerful Christian symbol of resurrection. It's often placed on the table at Christmas, where it's allowed to unfurl right on Christmas Eve. It symbolizes the hope that even after a difficult (dry) period, new life will come.

Guide: How to Grow It at Home?

Many people make the mistake of leaving the Rose of Jericho in water constantly. That will kill it (it will grow moldy).

  • Step 1: Place the dry plant in a shallow dish of water.

  • Step 2: Watch the transformation. Full unfurling takes about 1 day.

  • Step 3: Leave it unfurled for a maximum of 5–7 days. After that, you must take it out of the water and let it dry out completely again in a dry spot, so it goes back to "sleep."

  • Step 4: You can repeat this cycle (a week in water, a week dry) over and over, for several years without issue.

Not All Roses Are the Same

The Rose of Jericho is an amazing decoration and a botanical experiment, but don't expect fragrance or romance from it. If you want to express love, passion, or gratitude, reach for classic cut roses instead.

While the Rose of Jericho is about patience and cycles, a fresh rose is about instant emotion and beauty. At Květiny Expres, we specialize in premium varieties from Ecuador and the Netherlands, with large heads and a sturdy structure.

Want to express your feelings precisely? Thanks to our specialty, you can choose the exact number of roses in the bouquet. Want to give 25 roses for a 25th birthday? Or 100 roses as a grand gesture? We'll tie exactly as many as you wish.

Whether you're drawn to the miraculous Rose of Jericho for its symbolism, or you prefer the scent of fresh blooms, both have their place in our homes. One as a symbol of eternity, the other as a celebration of the present moment.
