Strelitzia (Bird of Paradise) – An Exotic Jewel from Paradise
Strelitzia reginae belongs to the bird-of-paradise family (Strelitziaceae) and is native to South Africa, where it grows as a hardy, shrub-like perennial. Its common name, “Bird of Paradise,” says it all – the orange-and-blue blooms resemble the head of a tropical crane in flight. This is a flower that does not need to fill a space; it commands it.
What it looks like and what will amaze you: Strelitzia is an architectural marvel. It has a sturdy, fleshy stem and a bloom with a leathery bract from which bright “feathers” emerge. It is one of the longest-lasting cut flowers in the world.
A florist's secret (pro tip): Did you know each Strelitzia hides more than one flower inside it? Once the first orange petals start to fade, you can carefully trim them away and very gently pull out another hidden bloom from the green bract (the “beak”) with your fingers. Nature gives you a second dose of exotic beauty for free!
A symbol of royal grandeur: It was named in honour of the British queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. It symbolises freedom, magnificence, and success, which is exactly why it is our first choice for corporate flowers and statement receptions.
Tip from Jana (Large Arrangements Specialist): “Strelitzia is pure dominance. When I am creating a corporate arrangement for a reception, I reach for it every time the goal is a 'wow' effect. Its shape is so unique that it does not need many extras – often just a few stems paired with good-quality greenery is enough. In our luxury bouquets it works as an uncompromising solo statement that instantly grabs all the attention.”
