Drying Flowers: How to Preserve Memories and Beauty Forever?
Did you receive a gorgeous bouquet for your birthday or anniversary, and does it sadden you that its beauty is only temporary? It doesn't have to be. Drying cut flowers is a wonderful way to stop time and hold on to the memory of a precious moment. What's more, dried decorations and the "boho" style are a huge trend in interiors again.
Not every flower is suitable for drying, though. We'll show you which ones to reach for and how to go about it, so the result isn't brown and crumbly, but colorful and long-lasting.
Which Flowers Dry Best?
Success starts with the right choice. Some flowers (like tulips or daffodils) contain too much water and would turn black when dried. Flowers with a firmer structure or a woody stem, on the other hand, are perfect candidates for drying.

Roses: An absolute classic. Smaller spray roses look best, as they keep their bud shape.

Eucalyptus: Its leaves look almost identical to fresh ones once dried, only shifting slightly in shade. And it still smells wonderful.

Many people make the mistake of only starting to dry a bouquet once it's already "fading" in the vase. That's too late. A florist's rule: "If you want a beautiful dried bouquet, you have to start drying it at the moment it's in its best condition (or just before it fully blooms). Once it starts dropping petals or browning in the vase, drying won't save it anymore."
The Process: How to Do It, Step by Step
1. Preparation Is Key
Before drying, take the bouquet apart. Strip off all the leaves from the stems (they dry poorly and don't look good). Trim the stems to your desired length.
2. The "Upside-Down" Method (To Preserve the Shape)
This is the most reliable method for roses, eucalyptus, and most bouquets.

Tie the flowers into smaller bunches with a rubber band (the stems shrink as they dry, so string would slip off).

Hang them flowers-down in a dark, dry, and well-ventilated spot (an attic, or a dark corner of a hallway, for example).

Darkness matters – direct sunlight would "draw out" the color from the flowers and make them fade.
3. The "Pressed" Method (For Framed Art and Herbariums)
Want to frame a flower?

Place the flowers between layers of absorbent paper (newspaper or blotting paper).

Weigh it down with a heavy book.

This method works well for wildflowers, pansies, or individual rose petals.
How to Care for Dried Flowers?
Drying usually takes 2–4 weeks. You'll know it's done once the stems are stiff and brittle.
- Fixing: To stop flowers (especially grasses and gypsophila) from shedding, spray them from a distance with ordinary hairspray. It fixes the shape and adds a bit of shine
- Dust: Dried flowers are dust magnets. Don't wipe them with a cloth. Every now and then, blow them off with a hairdryer set to the lowest power and cool air setting.
