Trachelium (Throatwort) – A Blue Mist in Your Bouquet
Trachelium (Trachelium caeruleum) belongs to the bellflower family (Campanulaceae) and comes from the Mediterranean, where it grows as a biennial or short-lived perennial – though in floristry it is commonly grown as an annual. Its name comes from the Greek trachelos (neck), reflecting its historical use in treating throat ailments. Today, in the world of floristry, it is prized above all for its “cloud-like” blooms. It is one of the few flowers that offers a genuinely deep blue-violet shade without any need for dyeing.
What it looks like and what makes it unique: Trachelium forms rich, umbrella-shaped clusters made up of hundreds of tiny, star-shaped florets. It feels remarkably delicate to the touch, almost like moss or a coloured mist. Despite its fragile look, appearances are deceiving – it is one of the longest-lasting cut flowers, easily surviving over 14 days in a vase with the right care.
