Spray Roses: Small Blooms, Big Impact

Spray Roses: Small Blooms, Big Impact. Why Do We Love Them?

When someone says "rose," most of us picture the classic image one long stem and one big bloom. But in modern floristry, their gentler sisters are taking over more and more: spray roses (also known as Spray roses or multi-bloom roses).
On a single stem they carry a whole cluster of smaller blooms, which gives bouquets incredible volume and a romantic touch. They're a hit at weddings, in "boho" arrangements, but also as a gorgeous birthday gift.

So what exactly is a "spray" rose?

While the classic rose (a hybrid tea) bets on the majesty of a single bloom, the spray rose bets on abundance. It was bred through crossbreeding, often with wild species like Rosa multiflora, to achieve branching stems.
The result is that a single stem can carry anywhere from 5 to 10 blooms at different stages of opening from tight buds all the way to fully open flowers.

3 reasons to choose spray roses

  1. Fullness and volume: Even a small number of stems fills a vase with a lush bouquet. Three stems of spray roses visually deliver as much as five classic ones.

  2. A romantic look: They appear softer, more natural, and less "formal" than classic red roses. They're ideal for meadow-style and loosely arranged bouquets.

  3. Gradual blooming: Because the stem carries buds at different stages, the bouquet in the vase changes and evolves every single day.

Caring for cut spray roses (It's different from classic roses!)

To keep spray roses looking beautiful for as long as possible, they need slightly different care. That's because their stems are thinner and have to feed far more blooms at once.

  • Plenty of water: Spray roses drink a lot. The water level in the vase should reach at least halfway up the stems.

  • Remove the leaves: This is essential! Spray roses carry a lot of foliage. Ruthlessly strip off any leaves that would sit below the waterline (and ideally the bottom third of the stem as well). Otherwise the water will start to rot and the bouquet will wilt.

  • What about the smallest buds? It often happens that the tiniest, still-green buds on the spray never open in the vase and simply dry up. That's natural – the plant channels its energy into the larger blooms. If a small bud droops its head, feel free to snip it off; the bouquet will look better for it.

Symbolism: What do they say?

Thanks to their "many blooms on one stem" nature, they symbolize fruitful love, abundance, and generosity.

  • White spray roses: Purity and innocence (a top choice for weddings).

  • Pink spray roses: Tenderness, motherly love, gratitude.

  • Orange and yellow: Joy, friendship, and energy.

Whether you choose them on their own or as a complement to larger blooms, spray roses are always a safe bet for elegance. Looking for inspiration on arranging them in a bouquet or using them for a wedding? Check out our guide to spray roses for arranging and wedding décor.
