Hypericum (St. John's Wort) – A Berry Jewel for Every Season

Hypericum belongs to the St. John's wort family (Hypericaceae) and is native to the temperate zones of Europe and Asia. In the wild it is known as a medicinal herb with small yellow flowers, but in floristry it is the cultivated ornamental varieties that reign supreme – low shrubs grown not for their bloom but for their gorgeous, glossy berries. These berries, ranging from snow white and candy pink to fiery red and deep coffee brown, are a symbol of abundance and vitality.

What it looks like and what makes it special: You will recognise Hypericum by its firm, woody stems carrying clusters of colourful little berries. These berries are very firm and glossy, so they look like tiny beads woven into the greenery. It is one of the hardiest items in our range – the berries do not wilt, they keep their shape and colour, and still look great in a vase after two weeks.

Facts and symbolism:

  • Protective power: Hypericum is popularly known as “St. John's flower.” Since the Middle Ages it was believed to have the power to ward off evil and protect the home from misfortune.

  • Symbolism: It represents protection, the joy of harvest, and new beginnings.

  • A seasonal chameleon: Hypericum is remarkably versatile. Green and pink berries freshen up spring arrangements, while red ones are the essence of autumn and Christmas.

Tip from Andrea (Seasonal Arrangements Specialist): “I love Hypericum for how instantly it adds flair to a bouquet. I never buy it as a standalone flower myself – to me it is an accent that only really comes alive combined with other shapes. It is an essential element of our autumn bouquets, where its rich colours evoke the fruits of autumn. But it works just as beautifully in meadow bouquets, where it creates a lovely contrast against the soft petals of eustoma or roses. We also use it often in our Christmas flowers and decorations, since red berries paired with evergreens are an absolute classic.”

Use at KvětinyExpres.cz: Hypericum is the star of our mixed bouquets – we do not offer it as a standalone item, you will always find it as an accent. The white and soft pink varieties are also very popular for wedding bouquets, giving them a modern, gently rustic character.
