Poisonous Plants

Poisonous Plants – Beauty That Can Be Dangerous

Plants surround us every day – they decorate our homes, gardens, and public spaces. Some of them, however, are not only beautiful, but also poisonous. Handled carelessly, they can cause skin irritation, poisoning, or serious health complications. Get to know some of the best-known poisonous plants found in our homes and in nature.

poisonous plants

1. English Yew (Taxus baccata) – Deadly Beauty

Yew is a popular ornamental shrub with dark green needles and red berries. Although the flesh of the berries itself isn't poisonous, the seeds, needles, and bark contain powerful toxins (taxines) that can cause heart failure.

Danger:

  • Deadly poisonous to both humans and animals.
  • Ingestion causes nausea, dizziness, heart rhythm disturbances, and death.

2. Oleander (Nerium oleander) – A Beautiful but Dangerous Flower

Oleander is a popular ornamental plant with gorgeous flowers. Unfortunately, it contains cardiac glycosides that can seriously affect heart function.

Danger:

  • Ingesting the leaves or flowers can cause vomiting, diarrhea, heart rhythm disturbances, and in extreme cases even death.
  • Poisonous to both humans and household pets.

3. Deadly Nightshade (Atropa belladonna) – The Witches' Plant

Deadly nightshade contains atropine and scopolamine, substances that affect the nervous system. In the past it was used as an ingredient in potions; today it's known for its extreme toxicity.

Danger:

  • Causes hallucinations, dry mouth, dilated pupils, convulsions, and respiratory failure.
  • A fatal dose for an adult is just a few berries.

4. Dieffenbachia (Dieffenbachia) – A Hazard in Offices and Homes

This popular houseplant contains calcium oxalate, which irritates mucous membranes. A single touch or a lick of a leaf is enough to trigger unpleasant reactions.

Danger:

  • Irritation of the mouth, swelling of the tongue, sore throat, difficulty breathing.
  • Especially dangerous for children and pets.

5. Lily of the Valley (Convallaria majalis) – The Poisonous Symbol of Spring

Although lily of the valley looks innocent, it contains powerful cardiac glycosides that can cause serious health complications.

Danger:

  • Ingesting the leaves or flowers can lead to nausea, heart rhythm disturbances, and loss of consciousness.
  • Especially dangerous for small children and pets.

How to Protect Yourself?

  • Get to know dangerous plants – before you get a new plant, find out information about it.
  • Use gloves – protect your skin when handling suspect plants.
  • Keep plants out of reach of children and animals – especially those known for their toxicity.
  • In case of poisoning, seek medical help immediately – if a poisonous plant has been ingested, contact your local poison control center right away.

Poisonous plants can pose a real risk, but if we know what we're dealing with, we can enjoy their beauty safely. Let's stay careful and informed!
