The coffee plant (Coffea arabica) is a houseplant with dark green, highly glossy leaves that brings a fresh, gently tropical atmosphere into your interior. It comes from the highlands of Ethiopia and makes a great green gift for any coffee lover. It counts among the easy-care houseplants as long as you give it the right spot.
In this article you will learn where to put a coffee plant, how to water and feed it, why it sometimes does not bloom or gets brown leaves, and whether you can really grow your own coffee at home.
Position: light and temperature
The coffee plant loves a very bright spot, but without direct midday sun, which could scorch its leaves. Ordinary room temperature of 18–24 °C is ideal. Protect it from cold draughts and temperatures below 15 °C.
Tip from Monika: The coffee plant is an incredibly rewarding and visually beautiful plant, and it is an absolute hit as a gift for coffee lovers. If you give it enough diffused light and higher air humidity, it may reward you after a while with gorgeous star-shaped flowers that smell sweet like jasmine. And the best part? Real red coffee cherries containing coffee beans can later form from these flowers!

Watering and humidity
Keep the substrate evenly slightly moist. Water with water that has been left to stand as soon as the surface of the soil has dried a little, and watch out for waterlogged roots. As a tropical plant it loves air humidity, so regular misting of the leaves does it a lot of good.
Soil, feeding and repotting
The coffee plant needs an airy, slightly acidic substrate. During the growing season (spring to summer) feed it once every 14 days with fertiliser for houseplants. We sell it in a basic plastic transport pot 12 cm in diameter, which is ideal to place inside a decorative cover.
Why a coffee plant does not bloom or gets brown leaves
-
Not blooming: most often it lacks enough diffused light and higher air humidity. Move it to a brighter spot without midday heat and mist the leaves regularly.
-
Brown leaf tips: dry air; more frequent misting helps.
-
Yellowing and falling leaves: waterlogged roots, a cold draught or a temperature below 15 °C.
-
Scorched leaves: direct midday sun. Move it to a place with diffused light.
Can you grow your own coffee at home?
With good care a coffee plant may, after a while, be covered in star-shaped flowers that smell like jasmine, and red coffee cherries with beans may form from them later. Take it as a pleasant reward for your care, not as a source of coffee for your daily cup. The plant is mainly meant as an interior decoration.
Coffee plant as a gift
It is an original and meaningful gift for anyone who loves coffee. With every plant we include a card for a personal message free of charge, so it is ideal for giving. You will find more ideas in the article Anniversary Gifts.
