Philodendron care: watering and why it turns yellow

Author: florist Míša, KvětinyExpres.cz · Updated: October 2026

Philodendron is one of the most popular houseplants because it forgives a lot and still looks distinctly tropical. It comes from tropical America and belongs to the arum family, like Monstera or pothos. It is one of the plants in our ranking of the most common houseplants.

In this guide you will learn where to put a philodendron, how to water and feed it, why it turns yellow or fades, and how to propagate it. We cover the two varieties we sell: the climbing Brasil and the compact Birkin.

Philodendron Brasil and Birkin: what is the difference

  • Philodendron Brasil has heart-shaped leaves in shades of green and yellow. It grows as a climber and also works as a trailing plant. In our range it is around 45 cm tall. You will find it on the page Philodendron Brasil.

  • Philodendron Birkin has dark green leaves with white stripes and grows compactly. It suits a desk, a shelf or an office. Ours is about 30 cm tall in a 15 cm pot: Philodendron Birkin.

Position: light and temperature

Philodendron likes bright but indirect light. Avoid midday sun through glass, which would scorch the leaves. It also tolerates partial shade, it just grows more slowly. Ordinary room temperature and a permanent spot without draughts are ideal.

Tip from Míša: The more light Philodendron Brasil gets, the more pronounced the yellow marbling on its leaves; in deep shade the foliage turns green instead. Birkin keeps its white stripes only with enough light, so give it the brightest spot without direct sun. Rotate the plant regularly so that it grows evenly on all sides.

Watering and humidity

Water when the surface of the substrate has dried slightly. The soil should be moist but not wet, because overwatering is the most common cause of problems. In winter water less and do not let water stand in the saucer under the pot. Philodendron appreciates higher air humidity, and wiping the leaves with a damp cloth now and then helps.

Feeding and repotting

From spring to summer feed it with a weak solution of fertiliser for green houseplants, and skip feeding in winter. Repot in spring into a slightly larger pot when roots grow through the holes or the plant stops thriving.

Propagation by cuttings

Philodendron propagates easily from stem cuttings. Cut a piece of stem with at least one leaf and a node (the spot where roots grow) and put it in water or a light substrate. Roots grow within a few weeks. This way you can make the plant fuller or give a cutting as a gift.

Why philodendron turns yellow, brown or loses its colour

  • Yellow leaves: most often overwatering. Let the substrate dry and check that water is not standing in the saucer.

  • Brown leaf tips: dry air or irregular watering.

  • Fading colour (Brasil turns green, Birkin loses its white stripes): not enough light. Move it closer to the window.

  • Slow growth: a cold or too dark spot.

Is philodendron toxic?

Yes. It contains needle-like calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause irritation of the mouth, drooling or vomiting in cats, dogs and children if a leaf is chewed. Keep it out of their reach. If you have pets at home, choose from our overview of houseplants safe for cats and dogs.

Frequently asked questions about philodendron

How often should I water a philodendron?

When the surface of the substrate has dried slightly. The soil should stay lightly moist but not wet, and in winter water less.

Where should I put a philodendron?

In a bright spot without direct midday sun. With enough light, both Brasil and Birkin keep their more striking leaf colouring.

Why is Philodendron Brasil losing its yellow marbling?

It is not getting enough light. Move it closer to the window, but out of direct sun.

Is philodendron toxic to cats?

Yes, it contains calcium oxalate crystals and is not suitable for homes where animals chew plants.

How much does a philodendron cost?

Philodendron Birkin (30 cm, 15 cm pot) costs CZK 326 and Philodendron Brasil (45 cm, without pot) CZK 479. In Prague we deliver express within 120 minutes, and delivery is free for orders over CZK 1,299.
