Pet-Safe Houseplants: Which Won't Harm Cats & Dogs?

Approved by Rozárka the Fox Terrier: How to Build a Safe "Urban Jungle" Risk-Free

You love plants, but your four-legged buddy treats them like a self-serve salad bar? Or are you afraid to bring home new greenery in case it harms your pet? You're not alone. Getting houseplants and pets to coexist is by far the most common topic we deal with every day.

And we know exactly what we're talking about. Our founder Monika and her partner Mirek have a tireless companion at home — Rozárka, a fox terrier. She's living proof that dogs and houseplants can live in complete harmony, as long as you know which species to choose. Together with our florist Bára, we've put together a list of plants that are completely harmless to both dogs and cats.

Why Do Pets Nibble on Plants?

Monika and Rozárka's experience speaks for itself: animal curiosity knows no bounds. Cats and dogs most often nibble on greenery out of boredom, curiosity, or because they instinctively need to clear out their digestive system. If you don't offer them a safe alternative at home (like cat grass), there's a good chance they'll sooner or later go for your most expensive plant. Luckily, in 2026 there's a huge range of gorgeous "non-toxic" varieties available, so you don't have to give up on your dream of a green apartment.

The Green Light for These Beauties: Safe (Non-Toxic) Plants

You can keep these plants at home completely worry-free. If your pet accidentally samples one, nothing serious will happen. Pick safe pieces from our range — these will brighten up your home and keep your vet calm:

  • Spider Plant (Chlorophytum): An absolute, indestructible classic. Cleans the air beautifully, grows fast, and its "grass-like" leaves make it endlessly entertaining for cats. It's 100% safe.

  • Boston Fern (Nephrolepis): Houseplant ferns are a massive hit again. They love higher humidity, look gorgeous in hanging pots, and represent absolutely no risk to pets.

  • Orchid (Phalaenopsis): Great news! The most popular flowering plant in Czechia is completely safe. Neither its exotic flowers nor its leathery leaves are toxic to pets.

  • Calathea and Prayer Plant (Maranta): Queens of breathtaking patterns that symbolically "pray" at night (folding up their leaves). They won't harm your dog or cat even if they ate a whole leaf.

  • Areca and Kentia Palms: If you want to bring a genuine tropical vibe home, these tall palms are the ideal choice. They're safe and look highly luxurious. (Careful: never confuse them with the severely toxic cycads!)

Watch Out! Keep These Popular Plants Out of Reach (Toxic)

Some icons of modern living contain substances that severely irritate mucous membranes or damage organs. If you have these at home, place them high up on cabinets or in rooms your pets can't access.

  • Lily (Lilium): EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! For cats, even the pollen alone is toxic. Just licking pollen off their fur, or drinking water from the vase, poses a real risk of fatal kidney failure. If you have a cat at home, say a firm no to lilies!

  • Monstera and Philodendron: These contain microscopic crystals that severely burn the mouth and throat when chewed. The animal usually stops after the first painful bite, but may drool heavily and vomit.

  • Zamioculcas: A very popular, indestructible "survivor" plant that nonetheless causes very strong stomach irritation in pets.

  • Snake Plant and Aloe Vera: Even though they clean the air beautifully and have medicinal benefits for people, they're toxic to pets if ingested and cause nausea and vomiting.

Tips From Monika and Bára: How to Make It Work in Harmony

Our florist Bára has two cats at home besides her dog. She successfully protects her indoor jungle with these simple tricks:

  1. Hanging systems: "What's up near the ceiling doesn't count. Macramé hangers are a huge trend right now, and also the single best prevention against dog or cat teeth."

  2. A plant sacrifice: "Always keep an easily accessible pot of plain cat grass on the floor. Pets graze on it, and thanks to that they leave your more precious pieces alone."

  3. Citrus defense: "Animals often genuinely dislike the sharp scent of citrus. That's why I put dried lemon or orange peel in the soil of large pots. It works as a completely natural, safe repellent."

What to Do if an Accident Happens?

If you catch your pet with a leaf of a suspicious plant in its mouth, don't panic — follow these steps:

  • Identify the plant: If you don't know its exact name, take a detailed photo of it right away.

  • Watch for symptoms: Look out for heavy drooling, vomiting, unusual lethargy, or a swollen mouth.

  • Call a vet: Don't wait! Save the number of your nearest 24/7 emergency vet clinic in your phone in advance, and consult them on next steps.

Growing beautiful plants and living with pets definitely don't have to be mutually exclusive. You just need to choose thoughtfully. At KvětinyExpres.cz we're always happy to help — message us on chat, and we'll gladly double-check anything for you, Rozárka, and all the other furry friends out there.
