Tip from Monika (proper care): Guzmania is a child of the tropical rainforest and grows as an epiphyte. In nature it drinks water and catches nutrients directly through its leaves. That's why at home you shouldn't just water it into the soil – pour water directly into the center of the leaf rosette (the so-called cup)! There should always be a bit of water there (approx. 2 cm). But be careful – roughly once a month, pour out this old water and replace it with fresh, so it doesn't go stale and the plant doesn't start to rot.
