Forget bouquets that wilt within a week. A bromeliad (most commonly the genus Guzmania or Vriesea) is a burst of color straight out of the tropical rainforest, and it'll keep blooming in your home for 3 to 6 months.

"A bromeliad is unique in how it drinks. In nature it grows on trees and catches rainwater in the rosette of its leaves. That's why, at home, you shouldn't just water it into the soil — pour water directly into the center of the plant (the cup)! There should always be a little water sitting there. But watch out — once a month, pour out the old water and refill with fresh, so it doesn't go stale."
Types of Bromeliads: Which One Is Yours?
The bromeliad family is huge (pineapple belongs to it too!). Indoors, you'll most commonly come across these beauties:
1. Guzmania
The best-known variety. It has a rosette of soft leaves with a striking, star-shaped "flower" in the center (actually colorful bracts).
- Colors: Red, orange, yellow, purple.
- Trait: Blooms for a very long time and tolerates partial shade.
2. Vriesea
You'll recognize it by its flat inflorescence, which resembles a burning sword or a feather. The leaves are often striped (tiger-patterned).
- Trait: Looks very architectural and modern.
3. Tillandsia
A relative of the bromeliad family. Some species grow in a pot (a blue flower inside a pink bract), others live purely on air moisture.
How Do You Grow a Bromeliad So It Lasts?
It's one of the least demanding flowering plants there is.
- Light: Bright, diffused light. Watch out for direct summer sun (it would scorch the leaves). In winter, place it as close to a window as possible.
- Temperature: It loves warmth (above 18°C). Never leave it in a draft, or near an open window in winter.
- Humidity: It comes from the rainforest, so it loves having its leaves misted (not the flower itself, which could get spotted).
What to Do Once It's Finished Blooming? (The Apple Trick)
The mother plant slowly dies off after blooming (which takes months). That's its natural life cycle. But don't despair! While it blooms, the plant produces offsets ("pups") near the roots.
- Once a pup has grown to about half the size of the mother plant, carefully separate it along with its little roots.
- Plant it in its own pot.
- Our tip: To get the new plant to bloom sooner, put a ripe apple in a bag with it for a few days. It releases ethylene, which stimulates flowering!
