Freesia – The Sweet Scent of Spring and a Symbol of Trust
Freesia is a fragrant bulb from the iris family (Iridaceae), native to South Africa. Once you have smelled it up close, you will recognise it blindfolded – in the world of floristry it is prized above all for its unmistakable, peppery-sweet scent that can transform the atmosphere of an entire home in an instant.
Facts that will delight you:
-
A botanical original: Freesias are known for their “one-sided” bloom. All the flowers grow in a single line along a horizontally curved stem, giving them their iconic silhouette.
-
The psychology of colour: Every colour of freesia smells slightly different. White freesias tend to be the most intense and classic, while red and yellow ones often carry a spicier note.
-
Symbolism: Freesia represents trust, innocence, and thoughtfulness – exactly why it is such a popular gift among friends and family.
Tip from Andrea (Seasonal Arrangements Specialist): “I love freesia for how easily it lifts even the simplest bouquet – just a few stems give the whole arrangement a new dimension. I use it, for instance, in our Cool Bouquet or the autumn-toned Indian Summer Bouquet. A small trick from the workshop: freesias open gradually from the base of the stem toward the tip, so if you gently remove the spent lower blooms, the upper buds get more strength to open and the bouquet lasts longer.”
✦ Use at KvětinyExpres.cz: Freesias are the stars of our mixed bouquets. You will find them in our by occasion section as an ideal birthday gift, as well as on their own as standalone freesias for creating a fragrant arrangement.
