Royal Lilies: How to Grow Them in the Garden and in Pots So They Shine for Years?
Lilies (Lilium) are flowers with an unmistakable scent and elegance that have been a symbol of nobility and purity since antiquity. Growing lilies is an incredibly rewarding activity — as long as you know how. Although they look exotic, many varieties are fully frost-hardy in Czech conditions and will keep bringing you joy in the same spot for decades.

Choosing a Variety: Which Lily Is the Right One?
Before you go buy bulbs, it's good to know what you're looking for:

Asiatic hybrids: The hardiest and earliest to bloom. They come in a riot of colors (yellow, orange, pink), but usually have no scent. Ideal for beginners.

Oriental hybrids: These are the exact royal lilies you know from luxury bouquets. They have giant blooms and an intoxicating scent. They need slightly more acidic soil and frost protection in winter.

Trumpet lilies: An absolute classic, with chalice-shaped blooms and a strong fragrance.
Spring Planting and the "Rule of 3x"
Lilies are planted either in autumn or right now, in spring. The most important thing is depth:

Planting depth: Plant the bulb at a depth equal to three times its height. If the bulb is 5 cm, there needs to be 15 cm of soil above it. Deep planting protects the plant from summer heat and winter frost.

Soil and drainage: Lilies can't stand "wet feet." If you have heavy soil, put a layer of sand at the bottom of the hole. Lily bulbs don't have a protective outer skin like tulips do, so they're prone to drying out — plant them as soon as possible after buying them.

This is the golden rule of growing lilies. They love sunny spots, but the soil above the bulbs shouldn't overheat.

How do you do it? Plant low-growing perennials next to your lilies (like hostas or catmint) that will shade the soil and keep it moist. The lily blooms will then happily bask in direct sunlight.
Fighting Pests: How to Deal With the Red Beetle?
The biggest enemy is the lily leaf beetle — a bright red beetle that can chew a plant right down to the stem.

Expert advice: It's best to pick the pests off by hand early in the morning, when the beetles are less active. Watch out — when disturbed, they drop to the ground belly-up, where their black underside makes them nearly invisible. If the infestation is severe, use an eco-friendly neem-oil-based spray.
Aftercare Once Blooming Is Done: Preparing for 2027
For your lilies to bloom again next year, you need to follow two rules:

Deadhead spent flowers: This prevents seed formation, which needlessly drains the plant's energy.

Don't cut the stems! As long as the leaves are green, photosynthesis is still happening, and the plant is storing energy in the bulb. Only remove the stems once they've completely dried out on their own (in October/November).
Household Safety
Lilies are gorgeous, but they're extremely toxic to cats. Not just the plant itself, but even the pollen or the water in the vase can cause kidney failure. If you have a cat at home, be extremely careful or choose other types of flowers.
Pollen Tricks for Cut Bouquets
If you have lilies in a vase, carefully remove the anthers (the pollen-bearing stamens) as soon as the flowers open. The flower won't waste energy on pollination and will last you 2 to 3 days longer. It also saves you from stains on your clothes.

First aid for pollen stains: Never wipe pollen off with your hand or water! Take a piece of tape and simply "dab" the pollen off the fabric.
