Christmas isn't just about cookies and presents. It's about atmosphere. And there's nothing more beautiful than when your home lights up with color and the scent of fresh flowers. Whether it's a majestic Amaryllis, a traditional poinsettia, or elegant roses.
At Květiny Expres, we know winter is a tough season for flowers. That's why we deliver them with our own courier service, Airway. That way they arrive warm and in perfect condition, ready to bring joy all through the holidays.
Which varieties do our florists Monika, Bára, Jana and Andrea recommend this year?
1. Amaryllis – The Queen of Winter Bouquets
If you're looking for a centerpiece for your Christmas Eve table, Amaryllis is the obvious choice. It's one of the most beautiful Christmas flowers there is. Its huge, trumpet-shaped blooms on a long stem look majestic and festive.
Although it comes from tropical America, it has become a symbol of Czech Christmas. We most often tie it in bright red, which matches traditional decor, or in pure white, reminiscent of a snowy winter garden.
Tip from florist Bára: "Amaryllis is an amazing bloomer. In a cut bouquet, it stays fresh for more than 7 days. If you want something modern, try a waxed Amaryllis bulb. It needs no water or pot, the bulb has all the energy stored inside. Just set it on the table and watch it grow."
2. Poinsettia – The Absolute Classic
What would Christmas be without the Poinsettia? This plant with its gorgeous red-and-green leaves is the most popular potted Christmas flower in the Czech Republic. It comes from Mexico, tied to a legend about a poor girl whose humble weed miraculously turned red in front of the altar.
How to care for it? Many people go wrong with watering or placement. To keep it happy for months:
-
Watch the cold: Never buy it outdoors in freezing weather. Our Airway vehicles deliver it warm.
-
Light and warmth: It loves bright light but can't stand drafts (watch out when airing the room!).
-
Watering: Only once the soil is dry. It must never sit in water!
Tip from florist Monika: "Once your poinsettia finishes flowering in spring, don't throw it out. Cut back the stems, trim off the old leaves, and let it rest. It can bring you joy again next Christmas."
3. Christmas Cactus
Looking for a plant that will even survive your vacation? The Christmas cactus is a safe bet. It's interesting for its flat, segmented stems, and rewards you with a flood of blooms in winter. To bloom exactly at Christmas, it likes a cooler room (13–17°C).
Tip from florist Andrea: "Starting in September, cut back on watering – that's what triggers the plant to set buds. Once the buds appear, go back to normal watering and don't move the pot again, or the buds will drop."
4. Mimosa (Acacia) – Sunshine in the Middle of Winter
Want something out of the ordinary this year? Try mimosa. This flower is like a ray of sunshine. Its tiny, bright yellow puffs smell wonderful and symbolize friendship. It brings warmth and joy to Christmas bouquets.
Tip from us: "Mimosa is beautiful even once it dries out. You can leave it in a vase without water, and it becomes a long-lasting part of dried winter arrangements."
5. Cyclamen – A Charming Winter Classic
If you have a cooler hallway or bedroom at home, Cyclamen is the best choice for you. This tuberous plant blooms exactly in winter. Deep red or pure white varieties are the perfect finishing touch for the Christmas mood.
Tip from florist Jana: "Cyclamen is sensitive to heat and watering. Never water it from above, onto the tuber! Pour the water into the saucer underneath. And most importantly – it loves the cold (around 12–15°C)."
6. Cymbidium Orchids – Winter Luxury
Orchids are a symbol of elegance, and the Cymbidium variety is practically made for winter. It comes from the cooler Himalayan forests, so winter temperatures don't bother it. White varieties look snow-dusted in bouquets. Their huge advantage is extreme longevity – they last up to 4 weeks in a vase!
7. Red Roses – Not Just for Valentine's Day
A lot of people think red roses belong only to romance. Not true! They're the foundation of the most beautiful Christmas bouquets. Their rich color, combined with green evergreen branches and gold accents, creates that true classic atmosphere.
Buying tip: "If you're ordering roses for the holiday table, don't wait until the last minute. Order them for delivery a few days before Christmas Eve. Thanks to the quality of our roses (Red Naomi, Rhodos), they'll open up beautifully by Christmas."
8. Cotton (Gossypium) – Winter Minimalism
If you like a more modern, Scandinavian style, cotton branches are for you. Their soft, white tufts look natural and work in both dried and fresh arrangements.
Tip from us: "You can combine cotton with evergreen branches, or use it alone in a tall vase – it lasts the entire winter without any care at all, since it's dried."
