The Phalaenopsis orchid (commonly called the “Moth Orchid”) belongs to the orchid family (Orchidaceae) and grows in the wild as an epiphyte in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia – that is, on tree trunks, not in soil. That is exactly why it thrives best at home in a clear pot with a bark-based substrate rather than ordinary potting soil. Its flowers resemble exotic butterflies, and thanks to their remarkable staying power (often blooming for months on end) they have become the most popular houseplant of our time.

Tip from Míša (Houseplant Specialist): “Phalaenopsis is an incredibly rewarding plant. The most common mistake I see customers make is cutting the entire spike off at the base once it finishes blooming. My advice: if the spike is still green and hasn't dried out, trim it just above the third 'node' (the little bump on the stem). The plant will very often send out a new side shoot from there, and you will see the next wave of blooms much sooner than if you waited for a brand-new spike.
