3 Rules for a Healthy Ficus
1. Placement (Light Is Essential)
It needs plenty of diffused light.

Ideal: An east- or west-facing window.

Watch out: In a dark corner it will start dropping leaves and its branches will go bare.
2. Watering (Don't Overdo It!)
A Ficus prefers being a bit too dry over having "wet feet."

Water once the top layer of soil has dried out (stick a finger into the soil to check).

Cut back significantly on watering in winter.

Leaves turning yellow? That's a sign of overwatering! Let it dry out.
3. Air Humidity (Misting)
It comes from the tropics, so it loves humidity. In winter, when the heating is on, mist it with a spray bottle. This also prevents the leaf tips from turning brown.
How and When to Prune a Ficus?
Ficus trees can be beautifully shaped. You can grow them into a ball, a cone, or even a bonsai.

When: Spring (March/April) is best, when the plant is starting to grow.

How: Trim off dry twigs and shorten any that stick out of shape. Always cut just above a leaf (a node).

Watch out: A white milky sap (latex) will ooze from the cuts and can irritate skin. Wear gloves!
