Peonies – Queens of Spring Gardens and Your Vases
When peonies bloom in the garden, we know summer is impatiently knocking at the door. With their showy beauty, intoxicating scent, and enormous blooms, they've earned the title of "queen of flowers" not only in China, but also in the hearts of Czech floristry lovers. Their season in 2026 will be one of the absolute highlights of spring.
Curious exactly when peonies bloom, and how to enjoy this fleeting beauty for as long as possible? We've put together a complete guide for you – from captivating history to secret tips from our florists.
History and Symbolism: The Flower of Emperors and Feng Shui
Peonies (Paeonia) come from Asia and southern Europe. In China, they were for centuries the exclusive privilege of imperial gardens, and to this day they symbolize wealth, honor, and prosperity there. In Western culture and the teachings of Feng Shui, they're seen as a very powerful symbol of romance and a harmonious marriage.
Did you know? While today we grow them mainly for beauty, in the past the peony root was enormously prized in medicine. The Latin name is even derived from Paeon, the legendary physician of the Greek gods. For 2026, peony extracts are also making a big comeback in modern luxury cosmetics thanks to their calming effects.

How to Grow Peonies (Golden Rules for 2026)
Peonies are incredibly long-lived perennials. If you pick the right spot for them, they'll keep bringing joy there for easily half a century.
-
Planting (The critical point): The eyes (buds) must not be deeper than 3 cm below the surface. If you plant a peony too deep, you'll get beautiful green foliage, but you'll sadly never see a single bloom.
-
Location: Peonies love the sun. In light partial shade, the shrub will bloom a few days longer, but the flowers won't be as gigantic.
-
After flowering: Remove spent blooms right away. But leave the leaves on the stem until autumn – they act as solar panels, feeding the root for next year.

The Most Beautiful Varieties: Which One to Choose for a Vase?
There are thousands of cultivars. Here are the ones loved by florists worldwide and by our own customers:
-
Sarah Bernhardt: An absolute icon. A pink peony with full, fluffy blooms and a gentle scent. Named after the famous French actress.
-
Festiva Maxima: A classic white peony with tiny crimson flecks at the center of the bloom. It has a very intense fragrance.
-
Karl Rosenfield: A deep purple-to-red variety, which creates a dramatic contrast in a flower bed (or a bouquet).
-
Bowl of Beauty: A Japanese-type peony. The petals are pink, and the center is filled with creamy yellow stamens. It looks very exotic.

"Many customers struggle with peonies either dropping their petals quickly in a vase, or the buds never opening at all. To keep your bouquet bringing joy for as long as possible, follow these four tried-and-tested tricks from our studio:"
-
The marshmallow test: If you're cutting peonies in the garden, squeeze the bud. It should feel soft like a marshmallow candy. If it's hard as a glass marble, it likely will never open in a vase.
-
An ice-cold water shock: Peonies genuinely love the cold. Give them very cold water in the vase, and feel free to add a few ice cubes.
-
Cleanliness: Bacteria are enemy number one. Wash the vase every other day, and always re-cut the stems at an angle by about 2 cm while you're at it.
-
Sugar water for stubborn buds: If a bud is "on strike" and refuses to open, try gently rinsing the petals with lukewarm water (its own natural nectar may be gluing them shut from the outside).
