Czech Public Holidays 2027: A Full Overview of Days Off and Shop Opening Hours

Planning a holiday, a long weekend, or just want to know when you'll get to rest in 2027? The calendar is very generous to employees this year. Most public holidays fall on weekdays, which opens up plenty of room for relaxation and visits with loved ones.

We bring you a complete calendar of Czech public holidays, an explanation of their origins, and important information about shop opening hours. As a bonus, we've added an overview of "flower holidays", which aren't official days off, but are marked in red on every florist's calendar.

When Must Shops Be Closed? (Act No. 223/2016 Coll.)

In the Czech Republic, trading hours are regulated by law, which requires shops larger than 200 m² to remain closed on certain days.

CLOSED on these days: January 1st, Easter Monday (March 29th), May 8th, September 28th, October 28th, December 24th (from 12:00 PM), and December 25th and 26th.
MAY BE OPEN: Good Friday (March 26th), May 1st, July 5th and 6th, November 17th.

Long Weekends 2027: When You Get the Longest Break

In 2027, 9 of the 13 public holidays fall on weekdays. The longest break without using any leave comes at Easter (March 26th–29th) and in July (July 3rd–6th); with a single day of leave you can get five days in a row.

May 1st, May 8th and December 25th fall on a Saturday and December 26th on a Sunday, so they create no extra time off. November 17th (Wednesday) does not extend the break either.

Detailed Overview of Public Holidays for 2027

January 1st (Friday) – Restoration Day of the Independent Czech State / New Year's Day

On the first day of the year we celebrate not only the new year, but also the founding of the independent Czech Republic in 1993. In 2027 it falls on a Friday, so it joins straight onto a full weekend. Shops are closed by law. It's an ideal time for New Year family visits.

March 26th (Friday) – Good Friday

A day commemorating the Christian Passion. For pupils and employees alike, it marks the start of a long Easter weekend. Shops may be open.

March 29th (Monday) – Easter Monday

The traditional spring holiday, associated with the pomlázka (willow-branch) custom. Note that large shops must be closed. Easter is a wonderful occasion to give spring decorations and flowers.

May 1st (Saturday) – Labour Day

The day of lovers and a celebration of labour. In 2027 it falls on a Saturday, so you won't get an extra long weekend this year – but you can enjoy a whole weekend free of obligations. Shops stay open. Don't forget red roses for your other half!

May 8th (Saturday) – Victory Day

A celebration of the end of the Second World War in Europe. In 2027 it falls on a Saturday – don't expect an extra long weekend, but large shops must be closed by law anyway, so don't count on shopping and plan ahead.

July 5th (Monday) – Saints Cyril and Methodius Day

A commemoration of the arrival of the missionaries in Great Moravia. In 2027 it falls on a Monday, so you get three days off in a row. Shops may be open.

July 6th (Tuesday) – Jan Hus Day

A remembrance of the reformer Jan Hus. Together with the previous day (July 5th, Monday) it makes an exceptional four-day break this year – from Saturday to Tuesday. Shops may be open.

September 28th (Tuesday) – Czech Statehood Day

The feast of Saint Wenceslas, patron saint of Bohemia and Moravia. It falls on a Tuesday – with an extra day off on Monday you get a four-day weekend. Large shops are closed by law.

October 28th (Thursday) – Independent Czechoslovak State Day

A celebration of the founding of Czechoslovakia in 1918. It falls on a Thursday – with an extra day off on Friday you get a four-day weekend. An important national holiday on which large shops must be closed.

November 17th (Wednesday) – Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day

A commemoration of the events of 1939 and 1989. It falls on a Wednesday, so it doesn't offer a natural long weekend this year – if you want a longer break, you'll have to take the whole week off. Shops may be open.

December 24th (Friday) – Christmas Eve

The peak of Christmas preparations. It falls on a Friday this year, so Christmas flows into the weekend – three days in a row. Shops larger than 200 m² may be open only until 12:00.

December 25th (Saturday) – Christmas Day (1st Christmas Holiday)

The Nativity of the Lord and a time for family gatherings. Shops are fully closed.

December 26th (Sunday) – St. Stephen's Day (2nd Christmas Holiday)

A continuation of the Christmas holidays. Large shops stay closed on this day too.

"Flower Holidays" 2027 to Remember

These days aren't public holidays and nobody gets time off, but that's exactly when more gifts are given. Be sure to mark them in your calendar:

February 14th (Sunday) – St. Valentine's Day: The day of all lovers.
March 8th (Monday) – International Women's Day: A day of respect for all women.
May 9th (Sunday) – Mother's Day: Thanks to our mothers (always the 2nd Sunday of May).
