Tanacetum

Tanacetum (Tansy) – Golden Buttons from a Czech Meadow

Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) belongs to the daisy family (Asteraceae) and is native throughout Europe and the temperate zone of Asia, where it grows as a herbaceous perennial. Its distinctive flowers look like tiny yellow buttons, bringing a playful, untamed wildness into modern floristry. At KvětinyExpres.cz it is a symbol of late summer and a return to tradition to us.

What it looks like and what wins you over: You will recognise Tanacetum by its dense clusters of bright yellow flower heads, which have no ordinary petals but form firm, velvety discs. The whole plant has a distinctive, spicy scent that feels wonderfully refreshing during the summer months. It is also a natural repellent – a bouquet with tansy on the table reliably keeps uninvited insect visitors away.

A symbol of return and protection: Even its Czech name, “Vratič” (from “vrátit,” to return), hints at an old tradition – it was believed this flower had the power to “bring back” lost love or health to a household. It is a flower of safety, home, and perseverance.

Tip from Andrea (Seasonal Arrangements Specialist): “I love tansy for its complete honesty. It is a fundamental element for my meadow bouquets, where I want to achieve a rustic, slightly wild look. Its yellow colour also beautifully brightens a bouquet and adds depth. If you are after a long-lasting decoration, Tanacetum is the obvious choice. It is great for dried flowers, since even once dried, its 'buttons' keep their colour and shape.”

Use at KvětinyExpres.cz: Tansy is essential for our autumn bouquets and farmhouse arrangements. As accompanying greenery and bloom in one, it works in every mixed bouquet meant to feel relaxed and natural.
