Fun Facts About Flowers

Fun Facts About Flowers: What You May Not Have Known

Flowers have fascinated us for thousands of years. They're not just colorful decorations for a vase. Behind their beauty hides a fascinating world full of biology, history, and sometimes even unexpected (downright shocking) secrets.

At KvětinyExpres.cz, we work with flowers every day. To us, they're not just merchandise — they're a passion. We've picked out the most interesting facts for you, so you can impress your friends the next time you give someone a bouquet.

Flowers With a Story (In Stock)

1. Roses and Apples Are Family

Next time you bite into an apple, think of the rose.

  • Fact: Roses belong to the same family (Rosaceae) as apple trees, pear trees, almond trees, cherry trees, and raspberries.

  • Proof: Take a look at a rosehip (the fruit of the rose) — its structure closely resembles a tiny apple.

2. History's Most Expensive Mistake: Tulip Mania

Today you can buy a bunch of tulips for a few crowns. In the 17th century, you would have paid a house for one.

  • The story: In the Netherlands in 1637, a single bulb of the rare Semper Augustus tulip cost as much as a stately house on an Amsterdam canal. It was the first "economic bubble" in history.

  • We write more about this madness in our article: The History of Tulips.

3. The Hydrangea Is a Chemical Litmus Test

This flower is like a chameleon. Its color isn't determined by genetics alone, but by the soil.

  • Acidic soil (pH below 6): The blooms will be blue.

  • Alkaline soil (pH above 7): The blooms will be pink or red. Gardeners take advantage of this and "dye" hydrangeas using special fertilizers.

4. Sunflowers and Their "Dance" (Heliotropism)

We all know that sunflowers turn to follow the sun. But did you know only the young ones do this?

  • How it works: A young plant tracks the sun from east to west to maximize its growth. At night, it "resets" back to face east.

  • Maturity: Once a sunflower fully blooms and grows heavy with seeds, it stops moving and remains permanently turned east (so the morning dew evaporates faster and mold doesn't form).

5. Floral Extremes: The Biggest and the "Smelliest"

Not all flowers smell like perfume.

  • The biggest bloom: Rafflesia arnoldii (Indonesia). The flower can reach up to 1 meter in diameter and weigh 10 kg.

  • The smelliest: Amorphophallus titanum (the corpse flower). The bloom can reach up to 3 meters tall and smells like rotting meat to attract flies for pollination. (This is one flower you definitely don't want in a bouquet!)

Inspiration for Your Vase (Fragrant and Safe)

6. A Florist's Insight: Fragrance vs. Longevity

This is an interesting tidbit straight from our own experience, one you won't find in any textbook.

Florist Monika reveals: "Have you noticed that the most fragrant roses often last a shorter time in a vase than the ones without scent? That's no coincidence. Breeding for longevity (sturdy tissue) often comes at the expense of fragrance (essential oils). A plant only has a limited amount of energy. It either invests it in strong stems and durability (like modern Ecuadorian roses), or in an intoxicating scent (like old garden varieties). That's why in our flower catalog you'll find both — just pick whichever is your priority."

7. The Orchid: Master of Deception

Orchids are tricksters. Some species (such as the bee orchid) perfectly mimic the appearance and scent of a female bumblebee with their bloom. The male tries to "mate" with the flower and in doing so picks up pollen, which he then carries elsewhere. The plant benefits, while he gets nothing out of it (not even nectar).

Nature is brilliant. And we're glad we can deliver a piece of that brilliance right to your door.
