Brassica

Brassica (Ornamental Cabbage) – The Robust Queen of Autumn Arrangements

Brassica (Brassica oleracea) belongs to the cabbage family (Brassicaceae) – it is an ornamental form of kale, botanically related to cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower. It is a biennial, but in floristry it is treated essentially as an annual: planted in autumn and harvested the same season for its massive, lacy rosettes of leaves that resemble exotic blooms. It is the perfect choice for anyone after something original that can handle rougher conditions.

What it looks like and what will surprise you: Brassica comes in stunning combinations of purple, creamy white, and deep green. The colder it gets outside, the more intense its colours become – frost, somewhat paradoxically, only adds to its beauty. Its leaves have a waxy texture and form firm, graphic centres that instantly define a bouquet.

A symbol of strength and abundance: In modern floral language, Brassica represents abundance, goodness, and endurance. It is a flower that will not be broken easily, which is why it is one of our favourites for seasonal bouquets marking the transition from summer to autumn.

Tip from Andrea (Seasonal Arrangements Specialist): “Brassica is an absolute must for all my autumn bouquets. I love its robust look, which gives our mixed bouquets a rustic touch. But watch out – like any cabbage, ornamental Brassica can start to smell in the vase. My trick? Change the water every day and add a drop of bleach or use flower food so the water doesn't turn. At Christmas, we spray these pieces gold for our Christmas bouquets, which looks incredibly luxurious.”

Use in floristry: It is a dominant element that will not be talked down. It works beautifully in large arrangements and is extremely long-lasting (easily surviving 3 weeks in a vase).
