Chrysanthemums Just for Cemeteries? A Big Misconception!

Chrysanthemums Just for Cemeteries? A Big Misconception! Our Florists Introduce the Queen of Autumn

Say "chrysanthemum" and many of us automatically think of All Souls' Day and the cemetery. That's a shame! We, the florists at Květiny Expres (Monika, Bára, Jana, and Andrea), decided it was time to rehabilitate this wonderful flower.

The chrysanthemum is actually one of the most versatile flowers in the world. Whether you choose it as part of a vibrant autumn bouquet or prefer the pure beauty of standalone cut chrysanthemums, it plays in the top league of modern floristry. Let's discover its true, design-forward face together.

Why Do Chrysanthemums Have a "Bad Reputation"?

The association of chrysanthemums with All Souls' Day is purely practical, not symbolic (in any negative sense). They're one of the few flowers that naturally bloom in our climate in late October and handle morning frosts beautifully.

Paradoxically, it's exactly this amazing hardiness that got them typecast here. But elsewhere in the world, it's the complete opposite – did you know that in China and Japan, for example, the chrysanthemum is a revered symbol of the sun, happiness, and longevity? It's even the emblem of the Japanese imperial family.

A World of Colors and Shapes That Will Amaze You

Forget the plain yellow "mums" from the supermarket. Modern breeding has turned chrysanthemums into works of art. There are hundreds of varieties:

  • Daisy-type (Santini): Fresh and cheerful, with many blooms on a single stem. They're wonderful in mixed, country-style bouquets.

  • Pompon (ball-shaped): Perfect, dense spheres made up of hundreds of petals. They look elegant and very modern.

  • Spider-type: Extravagant beauties with long, narrow petals. They're ideal for minimalist, design-driven arrangements.

Tip from florist Bára: "Personally, I love green pompon mums and large spider chrysanthemums. They have an amazing texture and look incredibly striking in a bouquet. They're proof that a chrysanthemum can be genuinely chic and luxurious!"

Beauty That Lasts for Weeks (Incredible Longevity)

Why do we florists love cut chrysanthemums so much? Because they're the record-holder for vase life.

With proper care (regularly changing the water and removing any leaves that would sit underwater), they can keep bringing you joy in a vase for a full 3 weeks, easily! No rose or tulip can compete with that.

What do we pair it with in autumn arrangements?

How to Use Chrysanthemums Indoors and on the Balcony?

A chrysanthemum isn't just "a flower for a vase." It's décor.

1. Minimalism in a Vase

Try placing just three stems of large-flowered spider chrysanthemum in a tall, narrow vase. Nothing else. The result is clean, architectural, and very elegant.

2. The Queen of the Balcony (Potted Plants)

Potted chrysanthemums are the easiest way to bring color back to a terrace after the annuals have faded away. An entryway flanked by two large chrysanthemum "balls" looks genuinely impressive.

Tip from florist Andrea (our outdoor-plant specialist): "Potted chrysanthemums are thirsty! They need regular watering to bloom lushly – the substrate should never fully dry out. And if you want them to bloom again next year, cut them back to about 5 cm after flowering and overwinter them in a cool, bright, frost-free place (a cellar or garage)."

Give Them a Chance, You Won't Regret It

It's time to give chrysanthemums back the place they deserve – not just at memorial sites, but above all in our living rooms. Their beauty, variety, and incredible longevity make them the ideal flower for damp, dreary days.

Next time you're choosing a bouquet that needs to really last and impress, remember them.
